Mind is the chief

Dear brothers and sisters,

The Dhammapada says: “Mind is the chief.” What does that mean?

Let’s see some examples.

  • If you were born in a poor family, poverty is the reason you live like a poor person or a queen?
  • If you were born in a poor family, poverty is the reason you are cheating or trustworthy?
  • If you were born in a poor family, poverty is the reason you live for yourself or for others?

Let’s see some other examples.

  • If people around you are cheating, people around you are the reason you are cheating or trustworthy?
  • If people around you live for themselves, people around you are the reason you live for yourself or for others?
  • If people around you are unkind, worry, boast, proud, rude, easily angered, keep record of wrongs…, people around you are the reason you live like them or Buddha?

Mind is the chief. It means your mind is your chief. Neither poverty nor people around you are your chief.

  • You live like a poor person because you like living like a poor person.
  • You live like a queen because you like living like a queen.
  • You are cheating because you like cheating.
  • You are trustworthy because you like trustworthy.
  • You live for yourself because you like living for yourself.
  • You live for others because you like living for others.
  • You live like people around you because you like living like people around you.
  • You live like Buddha because you like living like Buddha.

Your mind is your chief. Neither poverty nor people around you are your chief.

So don’t point your finger at poverty or people around you. Point your finger at yourself. Be responsible for all your thinking and acting.

Our mind is our chief. Living environment is not our chief. So don’t point our finger at our living environment. Be responsible for ourselves.

Mind is the chief.

Have a nice day.
