In October 2025, the CEO of Hidasan, a three-year-old Vietnamese food processing company, was arrested for falsely advertising buffalo meat as beef. Together with another company, SK Foods, Hidasan had imported cheap Indian buffalo meat, injected it with additives in powder form, and sold it as Australian and Japanese wagyu at about four times the original price.

VĨNH LONG, VIET NAM – At 81, farmer Nguyễn Văn Cu has chopped down the last pomelo trees on his one-hectare orchard, which used to earn him up to US$40,000 a year.

Pomelo was his life’s work until the extreme droughts and saltwater intrusion of 2016 and 2019 decimated his fruit trees. Today, he uses the dead trunks for firewood.
