VietNamNet Bridge – For many ethnic people, solar energy is a new concept, but Pham Thi Nam, a 50-year-old Muong woman from Dong Luong Commune in Thanh Hoa Province’s Lang Chanh District, now knows what it’s all about.

Nam went to India to learn solar engineering skills and helped bring light to dozens of households in her village.
Nam was chosen with other four ethnic women in the northern province of Thanh Hoa to attend a six-month training course at Barefoot College in India in 2015 under a project that focuses on creating opportunities for poor women to learn about solar energy.

HÀ NỘI – Việt Nam needs to develop a legal framework and feasible roadmap to turn its wind energy potential into reality, which will help to meet the country’s rapidly rising electricity demand, experts have said.
Tobias Cossen, head of GIZ’s project on supporting the up-scaling of wind power said that Việt Nam has great potential to develop wind power as the country possesses around 3,000 km of coastline with excellent wind conditions.
Project Type: Offshore wind farm, Bac Lieu Province, Vietnam
Developer: Cong Ly Construction-Trade-Tourism
Developed on a 540ha site in the East Dam region of Bac Lieu province, Vietnam, the 99.2MW Bac Lieu near-shore wind farm is Asia’s first offshore wind farm in the Mekong Delta region.
The phased development of the Bac Lieu wind farm included the installation of 62 1.6MW wind turbines, supplied by General Electric (GE). Construction commenced in September 2010 and the first phase was grid-connected in May 2013. The wind farm became fully operational in January 2016.
Local communities are at the forefront of the clean energy transition in Germany, with some villages relying 100% on renewables. EURACTIV Slovakia spoke to mayors there.
Neuerkirch and Külz are two small villages in Western Germany – of 300 and 500 souls respectively. And yet, they feel a part of something bigger that goes even beyond the country’s energy transition, the ‘Energiewende’.

When China halted plans for more than 100 new coal-fired power plants this year, even as President Trump vowed to “bring back coal” in America, the contrast seemed to confirm Beijing’s new role as a leader in the fight against climate change.
A young man returned home to invent an internet-integrated system that helps farmers produce more food with less water.
Tri Nguyen, CEO of MimosaTEK, was born and raised in Dalat, a city in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam, where the land is mountainous and fertile. He grew up surrounded by local farmers who planted a rich variety of products — from bell peppers and flowers to coffee and bananas. Tri moved to Ho Chi Minh City to work in the information technology sector as a young man, but when the opportunity came, he decided to return to his roots and start a strawberry farm with his friends in Dalat.
The renewable energy sector is growing fast: about half of the new electricity-generating capacity added globally in 2008 and 2009 came from renewable energy additions. Fast deployment has led to skill shortages in technical occupations such as solar installers and electrical engineers, but also in more general occupations, such as sales and finance specialists, inspectors, auditors and lawyers.
This report brings together the findings from 33 countries and arises from a joint EC/ILO project on Knowledge sharing in early identification of skill needs.
Vietnam wants to build a massive number of coal plants. But a former United States secretary of state is offering the country a cleaner path forward.
John Kerry is working with the Vietnamese government on an alternative to its coal plan — one that could provide the same amount of electricity, but with hydroelectric dams and solar panels instead of fossil fuels. It’s a scheme that would save the country billions of dollars, prevent pollution-related deaths, and keep greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.
So many clean energy investment risks! Reicher, Brown, and Fedor
