Renewable energy skeptics argue that because of their variability, wind and solar cannot be the foundation of a dependable electricity grid. But the expansion of renewables and new methods of energy management and storage can lead to a grid that is reliable and clean.

As wind and solar power have become dramatically cheaper, and their share of electricity generation grows, skeptics of these technologies are propagating several myths about renewable energy and the electrical grid. The myths boil down to this: Relying on renewable sources of energy will make the electricity supply undependable.

When Joe Seaman-Graves, the city planner for the working class town of Cohoes, New York, Googled the term “floating solar,” he didn’t even know it was a thing.

What he did know is that his tiny town needed an affordable way to get electricity and had no extra land. But looking at a map, one feature stood out.

“We have this 14-acre water reservoir,” he said.

Seaman-Graves soon found the reservoir could hold enough solar panels to power all the municipal buildings and streetlights, saving the city more than $500,000 each year. He had stumbled upon a form of clean energy that is steeply ramping up.

Ninh Thuan, Vietnam – For up to 12 days every month, Tran Nhu Anh Kiet, a supermarket manager in Vietnam’s Ninh Thuan province, is forced to turn off his solar panels during the most lucrative peak sunshine hours.

“I’m losing on average 40 percent of output,” Kiet told Al Jazeera, referring to the solar panels he installed on the roof of his store so he could sell power to the national grid.

“Before the curtailments, our revenue was 100 million Vietnamese Dong [$4,136], now it is just 60 million Vietnamese Dong [$2,589].”

The UN secretary-general, António Guterres, has issued a stark warning concerning the “dismal litany of humanity’s failure to tackle climate disruption” in a speech in which he set out “five critical actions to jumpstart the renewable energy transition”.

Speaking at the launch of the World Meteorological Organisation’s State of the Global Climate 2021 Report, Guterres described the global energy system as “broken” and “bringing us ever closer to climate catastrophe”. He called on the world to “end fossil fuel pollution and accelerate the renewable energy transition, before we incinerate our only home”.

Vietnam will find it hard to mobilize foreign funding for coal-fired electricity plants because many nations have vowed to step up environmental protection.

Most of the investments in coal-fired electricity plants in Vietnam in 2015-21 came from China, South Korea and Japan, but the three countries have now pledged to stop investing in such power stations, Mark Hutchinson, chairman of the Southeast Asia Task Force, Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) Asia, said at an online conference on finance for energy projects on Monday.

Three wind power plants in Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang have been connected to the national grid.

Vo Van Chieu, director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, said the Southern Power Corporation has put into operation the first three wind power plants in the province with a total capacity of 90MW.

All three factories, including Lac Hoa, Quoc Vinh and Wind power plant No 7, are located in Vinh Chau town.

Each plant has six turbines and can supply electricity to the national grid with an average annual output of about 93 million to 108 million kWh per year.

Soc Trang has around 72km of coast with constant strong winds, suitable for generating power.

The province plans to have 20 wind power plants in all with a total capacity of 1,435MW.

Wind-power plant projects play an important role in the socio-economic development of Soc Trang province. The projects are expected to attract other investors and develop the local industry./.

Chính vì chạy đua cho kịp tiến độ, nhiều dự án điện gió đã “bất chấp” để thi công dù hồ sơ pháp lý chưa hoàn thiện, đặc biệt khâu đền bù giải phóng mặt bằng đang gặp nhiều trở ngại.

Many offshore wind power investors are holding their breath waiting for the next move of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Government.

Nearly three years have passed since the Prime Minister’s Decision 39 dated September 10, 2018 on wind power prices was issued, with the offshore wind power price over VND2,223/kWh (US$9.8 cent/kWh), but no offshore wind power project has kicked off yet.

Many foreign and domestic investors have surveyed and conducted research on offshore wind power in Vietnam. They have said the price of over VND2,200/kWh is “acceptable”. However, three years is still a short time for these projects to be implemented in reality, while this incentive price will end in two months.
