Tip culture

Dear brothers and sisters,

Every time I go to a coffee shop, I always tip the waiter / waitress serving me, from 1 to 2 persons, about 10.000 VND per person. If I’m satisfied with their customer care, I’ll tip double. When I use GrabCar, I tip the driver about 10.000 VND. When a delivery man carries my stuff into my house, I tip him about 20.000 VND. When an electrician or plumber fixes things in my house, I tip him about 20.000 VND. When I go to a restaurant, I tip about 15% of my bill…

I know about the culture of tip from anh Hoành. Anh Hoành wrote on ĐCN 10 years ago that waiters and waitresses in restaurants have to work hard but get very low wages, they live mainly on tips, so we should tip them generously. To many of us, a 10.000-VND tip may be a small amount, but to the poor, it is large. We can bring joy to people by such small things.

Besides, tip will help people do customer care better. Person who works better will get more tips than person who works badly. For example: the best waiter will get tip about 20%, the second best waiter will get tip about 10-15%, and the worst waiter will get tip about 5%.

More importantly, when we tip, we express our gratitude to those who help us. It is a very good way to say thank-you to people who serve you.

Vietnam should grow the culture of tip so that: (1) everyone is happier, (2) everyone works better, and (3) we express our thanks better.

Have a nice day.
