Trong đời có những vết thương lớn của ta, hoặc do lỗi người khác, hoặc lỗi của ta, nhưng làm ta đau đớn mãi, không quên được, đôi khí thì nhức nhối, đôi khi thì ân hận, đôi khi thì tức giận… Dù lý do gì, thì vấn đề là “vết thương này, sau bao nhiêu năm, vẫn hành hạ tôi.”

Các bạn, những vết thương lòng có thể theo ta đến tận cuối đời. Thực sự thì chẳng bao giờ ta quên những vết thương lớn. Thỉnh thoảng ký ức lại tràn về. Đó là chuyện đương nhiên của sinh học. Nhưng đó khác hơn là vết thương vẫn cứ mưng mủ và đau đớn mỗi ngày đã 30 năm, 40 năm rồi. Những vết thương sống như thế làm hại đời ta dữ dội – làm cho ta đau đớn, tiêu cực về cuộc đời, tiêu cực về con người và thế giới, và tiêu cực về cả chính mình.

Đó là lý do Phật gia dạy Tĩnh lặng. Tĩnh lặng để thoát khổ. Những vết thương đau là khổ, hết vết thương thì thoát khổ.

Andrew Rhodes wrote this essay while a student at the U.S. Naval War College. It won the Strategic Research Paper category of the 2019 Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Strategic Essay Competition.

In the early 20th century, the visionary Marine officer Earl “Pete” Ellis compiled remarkable studies of islands in the Western Pacific and considered the practical means for the seizure or defense of advanced bases. A century after Ellis’s work, China presents new strategic and operational challenges to the U.S. position in Asia, and it is time for Washington to develop a coherent strategy, one that will last another 100 years, for the islands of the Western Pacific. It has become common to consider the second island chain as a defining feature of Pacific geography, but when Ellis mastered its geography, he saw not a “chain,” but a “cloud.”

Massive boats dredge sand, threaten erosion on rivers in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta

Despite facing furious opposition from local residents, a big barge equipped with dredgers is publicly extracting sand off the Tra On River in Vinh Long Province, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

The barge has mined sand on the river for a few days, residents of My An Village in the province’s Binh Minh Town, said in a report to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday.

As witnessed by Tuoi Tre, a massive boat numbered LA-07135 appeared at the junction of the Hau River and the Tra On River.
