Learn and Do
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
There is no word for “học hành” in English. If you ask Google, it will translate “học hành” as “studying/study,” meaning it only translates the word “học” and loses the word “hành,” or it has combined the meaning of “học hành” into one word, “học.”
Vietnamese is very clear: “Học hành” has two sounds with two different meanings – “học” means “to study (theory)”; “hành” means “to go (like a journey), to work, to act, to practice.” Learning (học) means learning theory and there’s still a need to practice (hành) that theory through action – that’s why we say “học hành.”
Learning without practice is called learning by rote or parrot learning.
So, how do we learn?
1. The most common way is to learn theory first and practice it later as you go. “Learn” (học) a little about the musical notes on the staff (the pentagram) and on the guitar fretboard, then pick up the guitar and “practice” (hành). Or, after watching YouTube teaching how to cook chicken stir-fry with chili and lemongrass (học), take out the pan and “practice” (hành) making chicken stir-fry with chili and lemongrass.
2. Also very common. That is: learning and doing are one – being a father is learning how to be a father, being a teacher is learning how to be a teacher, being a leader is learning how to be a leader, being a doctor is learning how to be a doctor… We always learn like that throughout our lives, without ceasing.
3. Sometimes we have to act (hành) before learning (học). In the past, people from Central Vietnam migrated to the Mekong Delta, a swampy, waterlogged region with dense forests, to reclaim land and establish settlements. Nobody knew anything; they had to embank earth, cut trees, clear forests, build dikes, build houses, create gardens… They did it first (hành), and then knowledge would come to learn later (học).
You can see immediately that doing is more important than learning. You can learn by rote and never act, so you’ll never know anything.
But, you can act immediately, because there is no teacher to teach you – you are a pioneer exploring uncharted wilderness. However, after a period of trial and error, you will naturally be a teacher to many who follow.
Therefore,:
– (1) Don’t attach importance to theory, academic degrees, diplomas, and the empty rhetoric of rote learning. In the old days, it was all about royal clothes and hats, with a large entourage, returning home in glory so that the whole village (or district?) would line up to welcome you.
Nowadays, business cards have master’s degrees, doctorates, and even 20 certificates and professional titles that are so difficult to read that no one can understand what the business card is saying or to whom.
– (2) Value action, going forward, going up, practicing, exploring – going into the unknown: In difficult times, circumstances create heroes; in times of decline, if we lose this battle, we will try another; in times of failure, failure is the mother of success; in times of glory, we give thanks to God and Buddha – everything is given by Heaven, for us to manage them on Heaven’s behalf, to serve everyone else.
With compassion,
Hoành
