Jesus,
In Israel then,
servants had to serve their masters
but they had the right not to wash other’s feet,
even their masters’.
But you washed other’s feet
and washed your own disciples’ feet.
You acted as a servant.
Oh no, your act was lowlier than a servant’s act.
…
You said to your disciples,
“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so,
for that is what I am.
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
you also should wash one another’s feet.”*
Because you knew yourself,
you knew you were Lord and Teacher,
so you acted as a servant.
You became the servant of your disciples.
You showed
‘how a Teacher is,
and what a Teacher does.’
A Teacher is the servant of his disciples.
A Teacher serves his disciples,
so that they may also become Teachers.
How your heart is wide and deep.
I love you, Jesus.
Amen.
