In the name of love
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
People do all sorts of crazy things in the name of love—spouses torment each other, parents coerce their children, and nations slaughter one another—all in the name of love. Naturally, whatever actions are taken, they are done in the name of love or in the name of God and the Buddha, so as to claim the moral high ground.
This is nothing new to anyone. What’s strange is that the whole world is well aware of the issue yet persists in the same old patterns; consequently, families are in discord, nations are insecure, and the world is unstable.
Friends, if you love, love sincerely. When loving others, practice loving-kindness and compassion, and Big love—without coercion, pressure, conflict, or war.
In loving others, forbearance is paramount. Forbearance means patience, accommodation, and a willingness to endure humiliation. Jesus said: “If your enemy slaps you on one cheek, turn the other.”
The foundation of love is the absence of the “self” (or non-self). The “I” disappears, and one truly cares only for the joy and happiness of others.
Do not use love as a pretext to complicate your own life or to fill the lives of those around you with stress.
Instead, let love inspire you to live like a Bodhisattva or a saint. That is precisely what God and the Buddha teach.
With compassion,
Hoành
