Nanyang Fellows Programme

The Nanyang Fellows Programme was launched in 1998 by Dr Tony Tan. Since then courses are conducted annually with an optimum cohort of around 20-30 students. The small size enhances learning and interaction on a personal level. In this 12-month full-time programme, the Nanyang Fellow will spend ten and a half months at the Nanyang Business School in Singapore, three weeks at MIT’s Sloan School of Management in Boston and two weeks in Wharton, University of Pennsylvania. The programme also includes a compulsory Business Study Mission (BSM) in a carefully selected country around the world. The programme also includes a Leadership Seminar Series where you will gain privileged insights from the experiences of top business and government leaders through closed-door dialogues.

The Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship (NPGS) is a competitive and prestigious scholarship scheme designed to encourage outstanding graduates or final-year students to take their first step towards a leading research career by studying for a doctoral degree programme (PhD) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), one of Asia’s leading research universities. Forest and Nature for Society (FONASO) is a three-year world-class Joint Doctoral Programme (180 ECTS). FONASO is part of the Erasmus Mundus programme initiated by the European Commission to enhance and promote European higher education throughout the world. The language of the programme is English. The main objective of the FONASO programme is to educate the leaders of the future generation of researchers, teachers and top management staff working with sustainable forest and nature management, in both tropical and temperate regions, to ensure wider societal benefits. Within forest and nature management, the programme is focused on the scientific fields of (i) economics and policy, and (ii) ecology and silviculture. The emphasis is on applied research.

Every year approximately 8-10 fellowships will be available to academically outstanding applicants. There is one annual call for applications; short-listed applicants are invited to Europe to present and discuss their proposals.

Quan ho is a unique Vietnamese folk music popular in Red River Delta, originated in Kinh Bac. Nowadays, two styles of Quan ho still remains: Ancient Quan ho and New Quan ho.
There are some major differences between Ancient Quan ho (also called Traditional Quan ho) and New Quan ho. Ancient Quan ho requires strict standards and regulations – it is the antiphonal singing in which men and women take turns to sing in challenges-and-responses; while New Quan ho is more simple. The traditional one needs no instrumental music, and no instrument can follow the singing in Ancient Quan ho.

OHCHR Minorities Fellowship

Through this Programme, the OHCHR aims to give persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities – particularly young minority women and men – an opportunity to gain knowledge on the UN system and mechanisms dealing with international human rights in general and minority rights in particular. The Fellowship Programme is intended to assist organizations and communities in protecting and promoting the rights of minorities the fellows belong to.

The Fellows are based at the OHCHR in Geneva, Switzerland. The programme is interactive and consists of briefings on several topics (e.g. the UN system, OHCHR’s work, human rights mechanisms and instruments) as well as individual and group assignments.

At the end of the Programme, all Fellow should have a general knowledge of the United Nations system, international human rights instruments and mechanisms in general and those relevant to minorities in particular and be capable of further training their communities/organizations.

AMAROUT Fellowships

IMDEA (“Instituto Madrileño de Estudios Avanzados” – Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies) is the new institutional framework established by the Government of the Region of Madrid (Spain) to effectively combine and increase both public and private support for research of excellence in the region. IMDEA comprises a network of research institutes in areas of high economic impact, including: energy, food sciences, materials, nanotechnology, networks, social sciences, software, and water.

AMAROUT Europe is a Marie Curie Action (PEOPLE-COFUND) to foster and consolidate the European Research Area by attracting to Europe and, in particular, to the region of Madrid (Spain) top research talent. AMAROUT contributes with IMDEA to turning Madrid into one of the top knowledge generation regions in Europe. To accomplish this, during the next 4 years, the AMAROUT program will finance up to 132 researchers to join the IMDEA network of research institutes for one year (renewable up to twice).

Scholarships at the University of Dublin

The Department of Political Science at Trinity College, University of Dublin, is one of the top Political Science departments in Europe. It is a vibrant, outward-looking department that combines intensive research activity with the strongest commitment to high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. It is a member of the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy, one of around 24 schools within Trinity.

A background in a social science will be an advantage but not a necessity. Applicants are expected from candidates with a single or joint honours degree in Political Science, Economics, European Studies, History, Sociology, Business and Law. Other subject areas will also be considered.

The course is of twelve-months duration, on a full-time basis. Teaching starts in the autumn and the M.Sc. concludes with the submission of a dissertation the following September.Applicants must, in addition to the College requirement to provide academic transcripts and two letters of recommendation, provide a motivation letter and one piece of written work (for example an undergraduate dissertation or essay).

IDRC Fellowships and Awards

This Fellowship (a bequest from Helen S. Bentley and C. Fred Bentley) provides assistance to Canadian and developing-country graduate students with a university degree in agriculture, forestry or biology, who wish to undertake postgraduate, applied, on-farm research with cooperating farmers in a developing country.

In principle, IDRC supports research on all parts of the developing regions of the world. At this time, Fellowships and Awards is not supporting awards which involve research in Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Eastern Europe or Central Asia.

Projects should evaluate and/or promote the use of fertility enhancing plants, such as leguminous forages, shrubs, cover crops, and grain legumes in small farms. The intent is to seek ways to increase the yield of food crops, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and improve soil fertility.

IVCE is pleased to announce the seminar on “The Essence of Thang Long Hanoi Cuisine”

Thousands of traditional soul foods of Thang Long Hanoi have been well preserved in restaurants or street-food stands all over Vietnam, and some are introduced and promoted around the world, yet many have been forgotten. Beginning from the “Thuc vat Tat Khao” (Thực vật tất khảo tường ký lục “Records of the methodic steps in food recipes”), which was written in Nôm (the traditional Vietnamese language) in 1735 during the Le-Trinh dynasty, there were 189 exotic gourmet recipes… to the “Nu cong Thang Lam” (Nữ công thắng lãm “Winning Magnificient Recipes for the Work of Women) written by Medicine Grandmaster Hai Thuong Lan Ong… to those colorful dishes specially prepared for Tet (New Year) celebrations, wedding ceremonies, family dining, etc.

EC Call For Proposal on Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development

The European Commission (EC) has a long-standing relationship and cooperation with non-governmental and other civil society organisations as well as with local and decentralised authorities in the field of development. It is part of the European Union’s (EU) commitment to fighting poverty and promoting the rule of law and adherence to fundamental freedoms set out in Article 177 (former Article 130u) of the Lisbon Treaty.

The thematic programme “Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development”, introduced in 2007, should be seen as the successor of the above budget-lines. The overarching objective of this programme is poverty reduction in the context of sustainable development, including the pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and other internationally agreed targets.

ASEAN Champions of Biodiversity

Biodiversity loss can lead to human extinction. Unfortunately, this threat has not attracted enough leadership, public and media attention to generate a concerted effort to halt the rate of biodiversity loss. This lack of awareness is attributed to the dearth of information campaigns and materials on the values of biodiversity. To help fill this gap, the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and its partners are launching the ASEAN Champions of Biodiversity – a recognition program for outstanding achievements in biodiversity Conservation and advocacy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam).

The program is aimed at generating greater leadership, public and media awareness of the problems facing the region’s rich but highly threatened biodiversity and the need a concerted effort in biodiversity conservation and advocacy.

VIETNAM YOUNG LEADER AWARDS

The Vietnam Young Leader Awards (VYLA) is a full scholarship program to support outstanding government employees in obtaining a Master in Public Affairs at a world-leading public policy school. This anual program is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Training, and Indiana University. In 2010, roughly 15 individuals will be granted these highly selective awards.

A. Eligibility

i) Meet general requirements for Vietnamese Government’s scholarships (http://vied.vn/vn/54/3221/selections-scholarships.aspx)
ii) Be a current employee of the government (who receives a salary from the government budget)
iii) Have at least 12 months of working experience in the government administration or services

B. Award Requirements

i) Complete a 2-year Master in Public Affairs or Environmental Affairs at Indiana University
ii) Work for the Vietnamese Government for at least 5 years continuously upon completion of the award.

EC Call For Proposal on Promoting social cohesion, employment and decent work

The thematic programme ‘Investing in People’ pursues a broad approach to development and poverty reduction, with the general aim of improving human and social development levels in partner countries in accordance with the United Nations Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). It is based on Article 12 of the Development Cooperation Instrument (DCI)1, and is detailed in the Strategy Paper for the Thematic Programme 2007-2013. Part of the fourth theme of the programme –‘Other aspects of human and social development’– is dedicated to addressing inequalities and promoting social cohesion, fostering the ‘decent work’ agenda, and employment.

UN.GIFT Call For Proposal from Civil Society

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) play a vital role in addressing the issue of human trafficking worldwide. They are an essential partner in all prevention, protection and prosecution efforts. Activities that CSOs engage in range from raising awareness, measuring progress of commitments made by other stakeholders, collection and analysis of data, and influencing public opinion. CSOs help governments in identifying victims of trafficking and offer direct services to them; such services include legal assistance, medical and psychological care, as well as supporting voluntary repatriation and reintegration, or the process of integration in the country of destination.

While CSOs around the world perform invaluable work, financial resources to fund their activities are often scarce. In order to support CSOs in their counter-trafficking activities, the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) has established a Small Grants Facility. Through a Call for Proposals, a total amount of USD 500,000 will be dispersed to selected CSOs in 2010.

On 1 March 2010 , the Call for Proposals will be published on the UN.GIFT website inviting non-governmental, not-for-profit organizations working on counter-trafficking issues to submit their project proposals. Activities eligible for funding include direct victim support, empowerment of vulnerable groups and communities and cooperation between NGOs from countries of origin and destination. The amount of the Small Grants available are between USD 30,000 and USD 50,000 for each selected project. The final number of projects selected (10 to 16) will depend on the actual budget requested.

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) to launch the International Climate Initiative (ICI) in 2008. It strengthens Germany’s bilateral cooperation with developing, newly industrialising and transition countries in the field of climate protection and supports the ongoing negotiation process for a comprehensive global climate agreement.

The International Climate Initiative supports climate protection projects in developing, newly industrialising and transition countries (“partner countries”) and complements the Federal Government’s existing international, multi- and bilateral cooperation. The projects are geared towards the needs of the partner countries and are intended to support them in climate protection, especially reducing greenhouse gases, improving adaptability to the consequences of climate change and conserving and sustainably using climate-relevant areas which merit protection.
