Essence of Thang Long Cuisine (Tinh hoa ẩm thực Thăng Long Hà Nội)

IVCE is pleased to announce the seminar on “The Essence of Thang Long Hanoi Cuisine”

Thousands of traditional soul foods of Thang Long Hanoi have been well preserved in restaurants or street-food stands all over Vietnam, and some are introduced and promoted around the world, yet many have been forgotten. Beginning from the “Thuc vat Tat Khao” (Thực vật tất khảo tường ký lục “Records of the methodic steps in food recipes”), which was written in Nôm (the traditional Vietnamese language) in 1735 during the Le-Trinh dynasty, there were 189 exotic gourmet recipes… to the “Nu cong Thang Lam” (Nữ công thắng lãm “Winning Magnificient Recipes for the Work of Women) written by Medicine Grandmaster Hai Thuong Lan Ong… to those colorful dishes specially prepared for Tet (New Year) celebrations, wedding ceremonies, family dining, etc.

EC Call For Proposal on Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development

The European Commission (EC) has a long-standing relationship and cooperation with non-governmental and other civil society organisations as well as with local and decentralised authorities in the field of development. It is part of the European Union’s (EU) commitment to fighting poverty and promoting the rule of law and adherence to fundamental freedoms set out in Article 177 (former Article 130u) of the Lisbon Treaty.

The thematic programme “Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development”, introduced in 2007, should be seen as the successor of the above budget-lines. The overarching objective of this programme is poverty reduction in the context of sustainable development, including the pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and other internationally agreed targets.

ASEAN Champions of Biodiversity

Biodiversity loss can lead to human extinction. Unfortunately, this threat has not attracted enough leadership, public and media attention to generate a concerted effort to halt the rate of biodiversity loss. This lack of awareness is attributed to the dearth of information campaigns and materials on the values of biodiversity. To help fill this gap, the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and its partners are launching the ASEAN Champions of Biodiversity – a recognition program for outstanding achievements in biodiversity Conservation and advocacy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam).

The program is aimed at generating greater leadership, public and media awareness of the problems facing the region’s rich but highly threatened biodiversity and the need a concerted effort in biodiversity conservation and advocacy.

VIETNAM YOUNG LEADER AWARDS

The Vietnam Young Leader Awards (VYLA) is a full scholarship program to support outstanding government employees in obtaining a Master in Public Affairs at a world-leading public policy school. This anual program is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Training, and Indiana University. In 2010, roughly 15 individuals will be granted these highly selective awards.

A. Eligibility

i) Meet general requirements for Vietnamese Government’s scholarships (http://vied.vn/vn/54/3221/selections-scholarships.aspx)
ii) Be a current employee of the government (who receives a salary from the government budget)
iii) Have at least 12 months of working experience in the government administration or services

B. Award Requirements

i) Complete a 2-year Master in Public Affairs or Environmental Affairs at Indiana University
ii) Work for the Vietnamese Government for at least 5 years continuously upon completion of the award.

EC Call For Proposal on Promoting social cohesion, employment and decent work

The thematic programme ‘Investing in People’ pursues a broad approach to development and poverty reduction, with the general aim of improving human and social development levels in partner countries in accordance with the United Nations Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). It is based on Article 12 of the Development Cooperation Instrument (DCI)1, and is detailed in the Strategy Paper for the Thematic Programme 2007-2013. Part of the fourth theme of the programme –‘Other aspects of human and social development’– is dedicated to addressing inequalities and promoting social cohesion, fostering the ‘decent work’ agenda, and employment.

UN.GIFT Call For Proposal from Civil Society

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) play a vital role in addressing the issue of human trafficking worldwide. They are an essential partner in all prevention, protection and prosecution efforts. Activities that CSOs engage in range from raising awareness, measuring progress of commitments made by other stakeholders, collection and analysis of data, and influencing public opinion. CSOs help governments in identifying victims of trafficking and offer direct services to them; such services include legal assistance, medical and psychological care, as well as supporting voluntary repatriation and reintegration, or the process of integration in the country of destination.

While CSOs around the world perform invaluable work, financial resources to fund their activities are often scarce. In order to support CSOs in their counter-trafficking activities, the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) has established a Small Grants Facility. Through a Call for Proposals, a total amount of USD 500,000 will be dispersed to selected CSOs in 2010.

On 1 March 2010 , the Call for Proposals will be published on the UN.GIFT website inviting non-governmental, not-for-profit organizations working on counter-trafficking issues to submit their project proposals. Activities eligible for funding include direct victim support, empowerment of vulnerable groups and communities and cooperation between NGOs from countries of origin and destination. The amount of the Small Grants available are between USD 30,000 and USD 50,000 for each selected project. The final number of projects selected (10 to 16) will depend on the actual budget requested.

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) to launch the International Climate Initiative (ICI) in 2008. It strengthens Germany’s bilateral cooperation with developing, newly industrialising and transition countries in the field of climate protection and supports the ongoing negotiation process for a comprehensive global climate agreement.

The International Climate Initiative supports climate protection projects in developing, newly industrialising and transition countries (“partner countries”) and complements the Federal Government’s existing international, multi- and bilateral cooperation. The projects are geared towards the needs of the partner countries and are intended to support them in climate protection, especially reducing greenhouse gases, improving adaptability to the consequences of climate change and conserving and sustainably using climate-relevant areas which merit protection.

Training workshops on new media, ICT, and wireless technologies for social change

Mekong ICT Camp is a biannual training workshop on information, communication, and technologies for citizen media, community health, and civil society practitioners in Mekong sub-region.

Participants are welcome from EVERY countries and territories.
About 60 participants will be selected from Mekong sub-region, another additional 5-10 will be selected from outside.

The camp is organized by Thai Fund Foundation and Opendream, in collaborations with partners.

Two main themes we are thinking about for this camp:

Open mobile technologies for community communication, disease surveillance and disaster relief; and
DIY information activism and citizen journalism.

EC Call for Proposals on the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)

In the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), the indicators worldwide are not improving, the needs gap regarding modern contraception remains high, and adolescents — both girls and boys — remain largely underserved despite the fact that they are mostly already sexually active and that they represent future generations. Also sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is not consistently addressed inhealthcare programmes, nor is it linked to HIV/AIDS programmes in developing countries.

The overall objective of the call is to support developing countries to improve SRHR by strengthening civil society organisations to effectively advocate for the development and implementation of SRHR strategies for their population and contributing to provision of SRH services in fragile states.

Applications must address only one of the specific objectives of the call:

Specific objective 1: Advocate for SRHR policy development and implementation and awareness raising of SRHR

Specific objective 2: Improve access to SRH services and services for victims of abuse and rape in fragile states

Grant: UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund
Youth-led organizations in developing countries working to improve the lives of young people and their communities can now seek financing for their projects through the UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund. The Fund will provide grants for innovative projects that promote employment, good governance, shelter and secure tenure.

Only applicants aged 15-32 from cities in developing countries can qualify for a grant. Support will be provided primarily for those working to improve slum conditions and to raise opportunities for young people growing up in poverty. Projects encouraging gender equality or involving partnerships with the government or the private sector are particularly welcome. Small development initiatives are eligible for grants of up to USD 5,000, and larger projects up to USD 25,000.

The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) is a collaboration between the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). PhD training will be carried out in English at your chosen lab at A*STAR Research Institutes, NUS or NTU. Students will be supervised by distinguished and world-renowned researchers in these labs. Upon successful completion, students will be conferred a PhD degree by either NUS or NTU.

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) aim to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific, while addressing priority development issues of the region.

The ALA program comprises ALA Scholarships and ALA Fellowships. These awards are for leaders or those who have potential for leadership roles that can influence social and economic reform, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region.

ALA Scholarships are for study at Masters or Doctorate level in an Australian university. Study programs must relate to a priority development area: disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development, water and sanitation. ALA scholars also undertake a Leadership Development Program in Australia.

As ALA Scholarships are an investment in the future of the Asia-Pacific region, ALA scholars are required to return to their home country or the region for two years after they have completed their studies in Australia.

Selection for ALA Scholarships is competitive, based on leadership qualities, academic excellence and potential impact on return home. To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following criteria.

The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in
Agriculture (SEARCA) invites applications for its graduate scholarship (MS and
PhD) in agriculture and related fields (including biological sciences, social
sciences, economics and statistics, forestry and fisheries, environmental sciences,
agro-industrial technology and engineering, biochemistry, and development
management) for School Year 2011-2012. The scholarship is open to nationals of
Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam who are regular
employees of academic or research institutions or government agencies and not
older than 35 years old.
