Daily English Discussion–Aug. 5th, 09–36 New Streets for Hanoi ?

Hi everyone,
phocoHanoi
Probably you have heard about the proposal to have 36 New Streets for Hanoi, as the counterpart for 36 old streets of Hà Nội 36 Phố Phường.

The new proposal is to use the names of 36 capitals of the world to name 36 new streets of Hanoi, and to have reciprocals from those 36 capitals to put Chùa Một Cột in them.

How do you feel about this proposal?

Before answering, you may want to read other people’s opinions in these articles:

  1. Hi all,

I accidentally know this unique name on facebook and take a look on it, then find out it is really interesting “positive thought everyday”. The slogan is what we need in this stressful society. Thanks Mr. Hoanh for your nice work!

I do care about this discussion. I’m a Hanoian, I do love Hanoi because of its ancient beauties. But now, Hanoi changes a lot due to rapid development and urbanization. It’s natural in a developing country, but it’s also kinda sad. We have something, and we also lose something. 36 new streets with the names of 36 capitals in the world is a creative idea, but it’s unfeasible and take a long long time in negotiation to carry out if it’s approved. Also, 36 new streets must have some things related to its name, or else, it means nothing, just 36 ordinary streets with foreign name like Yecxanh!

In my opinion, this plan should have been carried out in a recreation complex. Hanoi lacks of these places for people to relax.

  2. Hi anh Hoanh,

Firstly, I would like to say “thank you”. Because you always help me to correct my English. This is useful for me to improve my English skills.

Second, I think that you are misunderstanding my suggestion.
I means that people will learn English to write their address not learn how to write their address.

    Thanks again.

  3. Hi Bình Dương,

Thanks for the note. Naming streets with names of capitals is a very creative idea. I have to give these folks their due credit for creativity. I love creativity.

However, I don’t think it will work out so well, because there are so many problems and the benefits we may gain are much smaller than the problems.

But learning how to write a street name would help you to be good in English? Come on! Isn’t that stretching our imagination a bit too far? 🙂

The other thing really bothers me is that, why should the prime minister office have time for this street name issue and has no time to say or do anything about China’s continuous arrests of Vietnamese citizens? Isn’t it sickening and seriously suspicious that your CEO has time to talk about what cake the company should pick for the Christmas party and says nothing about a company’s plant being on fire?

Anyway, here are some corrections in your writing:

The people who are living ON THE 36 new streets will learn English to write correctly their own address if they don’t want to meet any further problem.
At that time, English will become THE first language in Ha Noi, IN neighboring provinces, AND IN THE whole Vietnam.
It’s A great idea to improve foreign language for the citizenS.

    Hi anh Hoanh,
Please help me to correct my English if there is ANYTHING wrong.

    Thanks in advance.

    Great day, Binh Duong 🙂

  4. Dear H,

    Thanks for the article,

This must be another great idea from our great minds, or “đỉnh cao trí tệ”.

I hope we should include Beijing so that we’ll have more chances to adjust our national frontiers, in regards of the frontier issues lately with China.

    Sincerely,
    Stone.

  5. The using of the 36 capital’s names to title new 36 streets in Hanoi is a quite unfeasible matter for the time being. We can’t use any causes for the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi in order to invent this idea or that idea. We also have no idea whether these 36 capitals will agree to using their names for those new 36 streets or not. Morever, we don’t have any standards to select the names of these 36 capitals as well as places to name these capitals.
Around 400 days for us to reach our capital city’s birthday, and should we have enough time to carry out this project? Just a year ago, the amalgamation of some provinces to widen Hanoi provoked confusion, pressure and conflict among public opinions; so this issue must be carefully considered. Our old 36 streets are still flow in the length of cultures and histories and what will we then use the new 36 streets for? We don’t in truth lack great people, so why must we choose the 36 capitals to name 36 new streets in Hanoi? No countries in the world do the same way. Hanoi attracts tourists thanks to its natural beauties, long-standing cultures and historical traditions and Hanoi was twice acknowledged “The city for peace” also partly for that reason.
An idea of uniqueness but unfeasibility! I’m myself a Hanoian but I also say no to the above-mentioned idea. It’s really not suitable in the prsent time. Hanoi is the capital of the whole Vietnam but not just that of it own! I hope that our government will take the issue into consideration before their approval to implement it.
Thank for your topic, Chú Hoành!

  7. Hi Everyone,

This is my comment posted earlier on VNBIZ. I have edited a bit before posting it here.

This is a fascinating idea and it should be examined seriously.

The first problems I can see right away are

    1. What 36 capitals of the world to use? We may fight among ourselves for the selection. Say, I like “Washington DC”. What if many others don’t like it?

    2. If we use reciprocals, say, “we will use the name of a capital of the world that agrees to put Chua Mot Cot in it,” then:

    a. It could be a very long process–say, the government of the city of Washington may not be able put Chua Mot Cot there if the citizens of Washington DC don’t want it, especially at a prominent place of the town. Chua Mot Cot in an unknown corner is easier, but we don’t want that, do we?

And the negotiation process may take forever. Hanoi doesn’t want to wait that long, does it?

    b. Some important capitals of the world–London, Washington, Paris–may not care enough about the deal, and we will end up with 2nd rank and 3rd rank capitals only. No fun!!

If we have so much problem as I anticipate, we still can have a recreational park of the Disney World style with a global village of 36 countries.

    Have a great day!

    Hoanh
