Market told to limit pesticide import

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s plant protection product market is valued at US$1 billion a year, but the country is still heavily dependent on imports.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade estimated that in the first five months of the year, Viet Nam imported $400 million worth of pesticides and materials, a 41 per cent year-on-year increase. In May alone, the import value was $98 million.

Young artists promote traffic safety in Vietnam with lovable project

A group of young artists in Ho Chi Minh City have found a new way to spread traffic safety messages with their lovable artwork.

The project was finished in response to an initiative by the Ho Chi Minh City chapter of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union that called for youths’ contribution to the improvement of the local traffic culture.

The twelve-piece collection encourages people to obey traffic laws and use public transport for their daily commute.

This is a hard, tough and durable wood with no termites, even if it is buried underground. Tay and Nung ethnic minorities like using nghien wood to make columns of houses and floors. Walking on nghien-made floors never produces creaking. Nghien-made chopping boards are favored, because the knife cuts are clean won’t leave debris.

The nghien trees have been cut down by illegal loggers for years.

At a working session with Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung, local officials in the Mekong Delta asked for the right to exploit sand on a riverbed without consulting with local residents.

Under current law, to collect minerals, individuals and organizations must submit reports on the possible impact on the environment, and to dredge passage, they must consult with the local community.
