When a teacher of the law came to you and said,
“Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
“Foxes have dens and birds have nests,
but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”(1)
What did you mean?
Did you mean that
If I follow you,
I should have no place to lay my head?
I should have no house?
I should have no place to take refuge
for my body, mind and spirit?
I should become a poor,
poor in material and in spirit?
Did you mean such?
Why did you lead us into this way?
Ah yes, you said these things.
About material, you said,
“Do not worry, saying,
‘What shall we eat?’
or ‘What shall we drink?’
or ‘What shall we wear?’
For …your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.”(2)
About spirit, you said,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”(3)
Perhaps you wanted to say,
when we have no house,
no place on earth to take refuge for our body and spirit,
we only have one choice –
Take refuge in God.
By taking refuge in God,
we will be still,
and be filled with Your peace and love in heart.
Thank you, Jesus.
