Trong lịch sử Việt Nam, thảm họa kinh hoàng nhất phải kể tên Nạn đói năm Ất Dậu (1944-1945). Nạn đói này đã cướp đi sinh mạng của khoảng 2.000.000 người.

2 triệu người chết đói chỉ trong vòng khoảng 8 tháng, tập trung chủ yếu từ cuối năm 1944 đến tháng 5 năm 1945, diễn ra trầm trọng nhất tại Bắc Bộ và Bắc Trung Bộ. Trong đó, Thái Bình là địa phương chịu thiệt hại nặng nề nhất cả nước. Thái Bình có khoảng 280.000 người chết đói, tương đương 25% dân số toàn tỉnh khi đó. Phúc cho người xây dựng hòa bình, vì họ sẽ được gọi là con của Thượng đế (Matthew 5:9). Đây là câu Giêsu nói trong bài Hạnh Phúc Thật.

Trong Thánh kinh, Chúa Giêsu có một bài giảng dài rất nổi tiếng, giảng cho mấy ngàn người nghe trên đồi cao, gọi là Bài giảng trên đồi cao (The sermon on the mount). Đoạn văn ngắn này là đoạn mở đầu của Bài giảng trên đồi cao, và có tên là Beatitudes (Hạnh Phúc Thật).
