The Urtica Leaves
Once there lived a little girl with her mother in a peaceful village by the woods. One day, she asked the mother to take her to a garden close to their house. As the girl was the only child in the family and her father had died young, her mother pampered her and did all her little daughter wished. The girl sauntered to the garden with excitement. Upon arrival, she ran around to exam all kinds of plants. Suddenly, she stopped by a strange-looking plant. Curious, she touched it. Her soft and smooth hands were prickled by the plant thorns.
Painful, she quickly ran to her mother and cried out loud, “Mommy, mommy, the thorns prickled my hands.”
“There, there, don’t cry and show me what hurts you,” comforted the mother.
The little girl stopped crying and took the mother to the plant, who then looked at it and gently said to her, “My dear, this plant is called Urtica. If you touch the leaves softly, they will prickle you. But with all your courage, if you hold them tightly then they will be as soft as silk. Now just give it a try.”
Not yet believing her mother, she said, “You are telling me a lie. I will not do that. I am afraid of the pain.”
“Believe me! If you hold it tightly, it will be as soft as silk,” advised the mother.
The girl cried no more and asked her mother again not to lie to her. “Okay, I will try it.”
With all her courage she held the thorny leaves. It turned out that she did not feel painful at all. When she held them tightly with all her courage, they were indeed as soft as silk. She were very excited about this experience.
As it got darker, the two went back home. That day, the little girl learned a useful lesson.
Translator’s explanation: Don’t be afraid of any challenge. Step in and hold it tight, then it won’t hurt.
