Hai tướng không quân Mỹ David Goldfein và Charles Brown Jr. hôm nay tới Hà Nội, khẳng định cam kết hợp tác mạnh mẽ với Việt Nam vì ổn định và trật tự ở khu vực.

“Chúng tôi muốn tôn trọng sự dẫn dắt của Việt Nam và tôn trọng quyền bảo vệ chủ quyền lãnh thổ của Việt Nam. Điều chúng tôi có thể làm là hợp tác với chính phủ Việt Nam”, Đại tướng David Goldfein, Tham mưu trưởng Không quân Mỹ chiều nay trả lời câu hỏi của VnExpress về phản ứng của Mỹ khi Trung Quốc điều tàu khảo sát quay lại vùng biển phía nam Biển Đông của Việt Nam.

Bộ Ngoại giao hôm nay cho biết tàu khảo sát Địa chất Hải dương 8 quay lại xâm phạm vùng biển Việt Nam, chỉ vài ngày sau khi dừng các hoạt động trái phép tại khu vực.

Trong thông cáo phát ra hôm nay, người phát ngôn Bộ Ngoại giao Việt Nam Lê Thị Thu Hằng cho biết tàu khảo sát Địa chất Hải Dương 8 và một số tàu hộ tống của Trung Quốc ngày 13/8 đã quay lại xâm phạm vùng biển Việt Nam. Nhóm tàu này trước đó đã xâm phạm vùng đặc quyền kinh tế và thềm lục địa phía đông nam Việt Nam từ đầu tháng 7 đến ngày 7/8.

China started a series of military training exercises near the Paracel chain of islands in the disputed South China Sea on Tuesday, amid growing tensions with Vietnam over the vital maritime trade route.

Ships were prohibited from entering three locations in and near the Paracels from Tuesday morning until Thursday afternoon, according to three brief notices published on the Maritime Safety Administration website on Monday. No details were given of the purpose of the training, nor which military units would be involved.

The Haiyang Dizhi 8, a survey vessel belonging to a Chinese government-run corporation, began surveying a large swath of seabed on July 3 northeast of Vanguard Bank (Bai Tu Chinh) off the coast of Vietnam. The ship was apparently undertaking an oil and gas survey across two blocks, Riji 03 and Riji 27, which fall within Vietnam’s continental shelf under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The survey ship has been escorted by other vessels, including the China Coast Guard and maritime militia. At the same time, China Coast Guard ships have been harassing Vietnamese drilling operations in Block 06-01 to the south.

Vietnam takes a stand in the South China Sea

After buckling in previous confrontations, Vietnam is finally facing down Chinese expansionism in its oil and gas-rich waters

Normally, Vietnam would have backed down. In July 2017 and March 2018, when China reportedly threatened military action if Vietnam did not stop oil exploration in contested areas of the South China Sea, Vietnam blinked and withdrew its vessels.

Last year, Vietnam scrapped a US$200 million oil and gas development project with Spanish energy giant Repsol situated within its own exclusive economic zone (EEZ) due to Chinese pressure. However, when a Chinese survey ship and coastguard vessels sailed last month to the contested oil-rich Vanguard Bank, which also lies well within Vietnam’s southeastern EEZ, Hanoi stood its ground.

On August 5, the European Union’s (EU) chief diplomat Federica Mogherini will sign a new defense agreement with Vietnam, the first such security deal Brussels will have with a Southeast Asian nation.

It is the latest indication that the EU is trying to forge a closer defense relationship with the region and Vietnam in particular, which is at the heart of disputes with China in the South China Sea.

voanews – TAIPEI – Japan is helping Vietnam build a defense against the larger, more militarily powerful China as Vietnam says Beijing’s forces are occupying more than their legal share of the South China Sea.

Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya and his Vietnamese counterpart, Ngo Xuan Lich, met May 3 to “advance cooperation” on maritime security, Tokyo-based NHK television online said.

Hôm 19/7, người phát ngôn Bộ Ngoại giao Việt Nam Lê Thị Thu Hằng đã cho công luận biết rằng nhóm tàu khảo sát Hải Dương 8 của Trung Quốc đã vi phạm vùng đặc quyền kinh tế và thềm lục địa Việt Nam ở khu vực phía nam Biển Đông.

“Đây là vùng biển hoàn toàn của Việt Nam, được xác định theo đúng các quy định của Công ước của Liên Hợp Quốc về Luật Biển 1982 mà Việt Nam và Trung Quốc đều là thành viên,” bà Thu Hằng phát biểu, theo truyền thông Việt Nam.
