| Top of the Agenda Biden Again Says U.S. Military Would Defend Taiwan In an interview with 60 Minutes that aired yesterday, U.S. President Joe Biden said that if China were to invade Taiwan, U.S. military forces would come to the island’s defense. It is at least the fourth time (NBC) that Biden has publicly made comments appearing to contradict the U.S. policy of “strategic ambiguity” toward Taiwan, though the White House later said U.S. policy has not changed. The long-standing policy deliberately leaves unanswered the question of whether the United States would defend the island. China’s foreign ministry said it lodged a complaint (Reuters) with the United States. A ministry spokesperson said Beijing “will not tolerate any activities aimed at [Taiwan’s] secession.” |

Nếu các bạn nhìn quanh thế giới, các bạn sẽ thấy thế giới ngày nay hỗn loạn hơn 30 năm trước rất nhiều. Trước năm 2000 mọi người hồ hởi chờ đón thế kỷ mới 21 hòa bình và thịnh vượng cho thế giới, nhưng cuộc tấn công của al-Qaeda vào Mỹ ngày 11/9/2001 thay đổi toàn bộ thế giới từ đó. Ngày nay hỗn loạn khắp nơi, rõ ràng nhất là cuộc chiến Russia-Ukraine, căng thẳng Trung Quốc – Đài Loan, Iran, Bắc Hàn và đủ thứ chiến tranh vùng từ Syria, Somalie, Yemen, Sudan, Maroc, các nơi khác ở Africa, Israel-Palestine… (Đọc List of On-Going Armed Conflicts). PGS Vũ Văn Phái, nguyên chủ nhiệm bộ môn địa mạo, khoa địa lý Trường ĐH Khoa học tự nhiên – ĐH Quốc gia Hà Nội, cũng nhớ rất nhiều kỷ niệm đẹp khi lần đầu gặp gỡ và sau đó đồng hành với nhóm ông Howard trong suốt 20 năm tiếp theo.

BEIJING, Sept 15 (Reuters) – China said on Thursday that it had lodged “solemn representations” with the United States, after a U.S. Senate panel advanced legislation that would enhance U.S. military support for Taiwan.
If the bill continues to go forward, it would affect U.S.-China relations, Mao Ning, a foreign ministry spokesperson, said at a regular media briefing.

While countries in Asia Pacific have made great strides in controlling bribery for public services, an average score of 45 out of 100 on the 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) shows much more needs to be done to solve the region’s corruption problems.
Some higher-scoring countries are even experiencing a decline as governments fail to address grand corruption, uphold rights and consult citizens.
The top performers in Asia Pacific are New Zealand (CPI score: 88), Singapore (85) and Hong Kong (76). However, most countries sit firmly below the global average of 43. This includes three countries with some of the lowest scores in the world: Cambodia (23), Afghanistan (16) and North Korea (16).
Among those with weak scores are some of the world’s most populous countries, such as China (45) and India (40), and other large economies such as Indonesia (38), Pakistan (28) and Bangladesh (26). A concerning trend across some of these nations is a weakening of anti-corruption institutions or, in some cases, absence of an agency to coordinate action against corruption.

“Le festin”, tiếng Pháp, có nghĩa là “The feast” – “Bữa tiệc”. Bài hát được Michael Giacchino viết và được Camille biểu diễn.
Tựa đề phim – Ratatouille – liên hệ đến món Ratatouille của Pháp được phục vụ ở cuối phim. Đây là món rau củ hầm (cà chua, hành tây, bí ngồi, cà tím…), đặc sản của vùng Provence nước Pháp.

Thầy giảng rằng chúng ta tham sân si, tồi tệ, sống trong hỏa ngục, thì cả sảnh đường gật gù đồng ý, tán dương. Nhưng khi thầy nói mọi chúng ta đều đang có Phật tính, là Phật đang thành, thì cả sảnh đường im phăng phắc, có người thì cúi đầu, những người khác thì sắc mặt lạnh lùng, không nhúc nhích.

Khoảng năm 1998, ở Đồng Nai có chiến dịch kiểm tra lý lịch của nhân viên ở Khu công nghiệp Biên Hòa 2. Nhiều công nhân, nhân viên văn phòng các công ty Nhật Bản bị phát hiện làm giả chứng minh nhân dân, khai man tên tuổi và bằng cấp. Nguy cơ bị đuổi việc là hiển hiện theo quy định của pháp luật và nội quy công ty.
Nhiều người phải xin nghỉ phép để về quê hoàn thành các giấy tờ nhân thân và chứng minh bằng cấp. Người viết nằm trong trường hợp đấy. Khi lên xin phép cấp trưởng phòng người Nhật thì nhận được câu trả lời: quy định của pháp luật thì nên làm đúng, còn bằng cấp thì sau chừng đấy thời gian làm việc, ông không quan tâm nhân viên thực sự có tốt nghiệp đại học hay chưa, và nếu chưa có thì ông có thể nói giúp phòng nhân sự là bỏ qua việc phải đáp ứng yêu cầu đấy.

Crimes against humanity and war crimes have intensified in the wake of the February 2021 military coup in Myanmar, the UN Human Rights Council heard on Monday.
The Geneva-based body was briefed by Nicholas Koumjian, Head of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), who presented its latest report.
The Mechanism was established by the Council to collect and preserve evidence of the most serious international crimes in the country.

The proposed plan, which requires approval from European Union (EU) member states, includes new taxes on energy companies and “comprehensive reform” of the EU’s electricity market. Von der Leyen said she aims for the taxes on energy firms to raise $140 billion (Reuters) for European governments to disburse to citizens. She also pledged to work to ensure that Ukraine has “seamless access” to the EU’s single market. European leaders are scheduled to discuss the proposals at the end of the month. |
