“Let’s call the whole thing off” được sáng tác bởi George Gershwin và Ira Gershwin cho bộ phim “Shall We Dance” vào năm 1937. Bài hát nằm trong danh sách 100 bài hát dành cho phim hay nhất của Mỹ.
Lời bài hát gồm nhiều từ ngữ có hai cách phát âm khác nhau nhưng cùng một nghĩa như “khoai tây”, “cà chua”, khá vui để chơi với cho các bạn học phát âm tiếng Anh 🙂

Joshua Winslow “Josh” Groban, sinh ngày 27 tháng 2 năm 1981, tại Los Angeles, California, là một ca nhạc sĩ Mỹ trẻ, nhưng đã bán đến 20 triêu đĩa nhạc chỉ ở thị trường Mỹ.
Bố Josh Groban là người Do Thái sinh ở Nga, mẹ là người Mỹ gốc Na Uy. Học nhạc từ nhỏ, đến 17 tuổi được theo học thanh nhạc với David Foster, người đã thắng giải Grammy về soạn nhạc.
Josh Groban có giọng truyền cảm rất tự nhiên, không màu mè. Rất nhiều bản của Josh Groban là nhạc thánh ca, cho nên cách trình diễn của chàng cũng rất đứng đắn trầm tĩnh như hát thánh ca. Dù vậy sức truyền cảm tự nhiên trong giọng hát nhẹ nhàng êm dịu và ấm áp vẫn thực là tuyệt diệu.
Nhạc của Josh Groban thường mang âm điệu cổ điển, nhẹ nhàng.
Năm 2001, album đầu tiên lấy tên “Josh Groban” trở thành đĩa gold ngay lập tức, và trong vòng một năm nhảy từ gold lên “double platinum”.
Năm 2003, album thứ nhì lấy tên “closer” đi từ hạng 11 đến hạng 1 trên các Billboards trong vòng hai tháng. Bản You raised me up trong album này trở thành bản nhạc nhẹ rất được ưa chuộng trong các danh sách nhạc contemporary adult (nhạc đương thời cho người lớn).

Có lẽ đa số chúng ta quen thuộc với bản hát tươi vui La Bamba của Ritchie Valens. Ritchie phổ biến bản này năm 1958 và biến nó thành một bản nhạc nổi tiếng quốc tế. Nhưng là Bamba là dân nhạc và dân vũ truyền thống của tiểu bang Veracruz, Mexico.
Ritchie Valens là một nhạc sĩ Mỹ gốc Mexico. Sinh ngày 3 tháng 5 năm 1941 tại Los Angeles, với tên thật là Richard Steven Valenzuela. Ngày 2 tháng 3 năm 1959, Ritchie Valens tử nạn máy bay cùng hai nhạc sĩ nhạc rock Mỹ là Buddy Holly và The Big Bopper, thọ 18 tuổi. Ngày này được xem là Ngày Âm Nhạc Chết (The day the music died) trong văn hóa âm nhạc Mỹ.
Năm 1987, đạo diễn Luis Valdez làm phim La Bamba, do Lou Diamond Phillips đóng vai Ritchie Valens, nhưng với giọng ca thật của Ritchie.
Báo nhạc Rolling Stone xếp La Bamba hạng 354 trong 500 Bài hát hay nhất mọi thời đại.

Santa Lucia là một trong những bài hát nổi tiếng của dòng nhạc Neapolitan, là thể loại nhạc hát bằng ngôn ngữ của vùng Naples nước Ý, thường do một giọng nam hát solo. Đây là bài hát ca ngợi thành phố Naples và vùng Santa Lucia ở vịnh Naples.
Lời bài hát là những lời mô tả người lái thuyền về phong cảnh của vùng Santa Lucia khi màn đêm buông xuống và ánh trăng phản chiếu trên mặt biển. Người lái thuyền kể với chúng ta về sự kì diệu khó diễn tả khi nhìn những con thuyền dong khơi thật nhẹ nhàng và lướt đi bởi những làn gió. Người lái thuyền mời chào mọi người lên thuyền và không ngớt lời ca ngợi cảnh đẹp của biển và thành phố Naples.
Bài hát này cũng được dùng phổ biến trong ngày lễ thánh Lucy vào 13 tháng 12 hàng năm tại các nước Bắc Âu như Thụy Điển, Phần Lan, Đan Mạch, Ai-xơ-len, Latvia, Estonia, Phần Lan, Ý…Trong ngày lễ này một cô gái sẽ được chọn để làm biểu tượng của thánh Lucy. Cô mặc váy trắng dài với dải băng màu đỏ và đội vương miện bằng nến. Đi sau cô là những người phụ nữ, mỗi người cầm một cây nến, thể hiện ngọn lửa đã khước từ lấy đi sự sống của thánh Lucy khi bà bị trừng phạt và buộc phải chết thiêu. Họ cất vang bài Santa Lucia khi bước vào làm lễ nhà thờ.

Auld lang syne là một bản nhạc ai trên thế giới cũng biết, và đương nhiên là người Việt Nam nào cũng biết. Tuy nhiên lời chính thức thì có lẽ là đại đa số người đều chỉ biết có một lời chính thức: Ò e Rô-be đánh đu, Tặc-dăng nhảy dù, Zô-rô bắn súng, chết cha con ma nào đây, thằng Tây hết hồn, thằn lằn cụt đuôi. 🙂 Và tên Việt Nam chính thức của bản nhạc là “Ò E” 🙂
Auld lang sine là môt bài thơ phổ thành nhạc theo âm điệu dân ca truyền thống của Tô Cách Lan (Scotland), do Robert Burns viết năm 1788. Burns gởi bản nhạc vào Viện Bảo Tàng Âm Nhạc Tô-Cách-Lan với dòng chữ: “Bản nhạc sau đây là một bản nhạc cổ xưa, chưa bao giờ được in ra, chưa bao giờ được viết xuống, cho đến khi tôi ghi lại từ một ông cụ.”

10 năm trước đây cả thế giới tưng bừng đón không chỉ là năm mới, và thế kỷ mới, mà là thiên niên kỷ mới. Chúng ta rất may mắn được đón một sự kiện chỉ xảy ra 1000 năm một lần.
Time Square New York, nơi Trái Cầu Năm Mới rơi hàng năm vào nửa đêm để điểm giao thừa, đã có đến con số kỷ lục 2 triệu người tham dự lễ hội. Có lẽ phải rất nhiều năm nữa Times Square mới phá được kỷ lục đó.
Thiên Niên Kỷ mới đã được chào đón với hy vọng tràn trề cho một thế giới đầy hòa bình và tình yêu. Nhưng chỉ hơn một năm sau 11.9.2001 thay đổi mọi sự.
Giao thừa này, 31.12.2009 sẽ là kỷ niệm 10 năm giao thừa thiên niên kỷ. Hãy xem lại giao thừa lịch sử đó tại Time Square New York. 🙂

Maurice André (sinh 21.5.1933) là một nghệ sĩ kèn trumpet của Pháp, trong lãnh vực nhạc cổ điển. Maurice sinh ở Alès, trên rặng Cévennes miền nam nước Pháp, trong một gia đình làm nghề thợ mỏ. Bố của Maurice là một nhạc sĩ nghiệp dư.
Maurice học nhạc từ một người bạn của bố, người này khuyên là Maurice nên được cho vào trường nhạc. Để có thể học nhạc miễn phí, Maurice gia nhập một đoàn quân nhạc. Chỉ sáu tháng sau khi vào trường nhạc, Maurice thắng giải nhất.
Tai trường nhạc, có một vị thầy bực mình, đánh đòn chàng và bảo chàng chỉ nên trở lại sau khi đã chơi khá. Vài tuần sau, chàng chơi cả 14 bài tập ở cuối quyển sách nhạc của Arban, không sai một nốt.
Maurice thắng Geneva International Competition năm 1955 và Internationalen Wettbewerb ở Munich năm 1963.
Chàng nổi tiếng thế giới trong thập niên 1960 và 1970 với một loạt đĩa thu nhạc Baroque với kèn trumpet piccolo—loại nhỏ nhất trong các trumpet. Ngoài nhạc Baroque, Maurice còn dùng trumpet cho các bản nhạc viết cho các loại nhạc cụ khác như oboe, sáo, giọng người, và các loại đàn dây.
Các bản nhạc của Maurice thổi một luồng sinh khí mới vào nhạc Baroque và các nhạc cổ điển khác, và làm nhiều người say mê kèn triumpet, cũng như tạo hứng khởi cho rất nhiều nhạc sĩ trumpet trẻ trên thế giới, như Wynton Masalis.
Maurrice đã ghi âm khỏang hơn 300 bản nhạc lớn nhỏ.

George Friedrich Händel (23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759) là một nhạc sĩ người Anh gốc Đức, với giáo dục âm nhạc ờ Ý. Sau khi học xong ở Ý ông qua Anh lập nghiệp và trở thành công dân Anh. Ông là nhạc trưởng của ban nhạc thường trình diễn cho hoàng gia Anh.
Handel làm nhiều đoạn nhạc ngắn và một số tập nhạc opera dài rất nổi tiếng, như Messiah và Water Music. Nhạc của Handel được các nhạc sĩ nổi tiếng khác như Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Haydn ưa chuộng.
