SINGAPORE (CNN) — US Defense Secretary James Mattis accused China of “intimidation and coercion” in the Indo-Pacific and declared that the United States does not plan to abandon its role in the region during a speech Saturday in Singapore.
“Make no mistake: America is in the Indo-Pacific to stay. This is our priority theater,” Mattis said.

US Defence Minister James Mattis urged Vietnam and the US to enhance cooperation in defence industry and consider signing suitable documents to create a foundation for the collaboration.

He made the proposals at a meeting with Vietnamese Defence Minister General Ngo Xuan Lich on the sidelines of the 17th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on June 1.
The US is taking into account the transfer of jet trainers and other equipment to Vietnam, the US officer said.

Hôm thứ hai 14-5, Hãng thời trang GAP đã xin lỗi Bắc Kinh vì bán ra những áo thun in bản đồ Trung Quốc mà không thể hiện trên đó Đài Loan, Nam Tây Tạng và biển Nam Hải (cách Trung Quốc gọi Biển Đông). Hãng GAP cam kết trong một thông báo trên Hoàn Cầu Thời Báo rằng họ “tôn trọng chủ quyền và sự vẹn toàn lãnh thổ của Trung Quốc”.

Viet Nam News – HÀ NỘI – Việt Nam requests that China immediately stop sending bombers to conduct drills in Việt Nam’s Hoàng Sa (Paracel) archipelago, said the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, Lê Thị Thu Hằng.
Hằng made the statement in Hà Nội on Monday in response to a reporter’s question regarding the exercises, saying China’s dispatch of bombers to conduct take-off and landing drills in Hoàng Sa has seriously violated Việt Nam’s sovereignty over the archipelago.

Beijing ‘installs missiles’ on South China Sea islands

China unveiled the concept for the Twenty-First Century Maritime Silk Road (MSR) in 2013 as a development strategy to boost infrastructure connectivity throughout Southeast Asia, Oceania, the Indian Ocean, and East Africa. The MSR is the maritime complement to the Silk Road Economic Belt, which focuses on infrastructure development across Central Asia. Together these initiatives form the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative designed to enhance China’s influence across Asia.

- More than half the fishing vessel in the world operate in the South China Sea, where sovereign rights have been an object of fierce contention among bordering countries.
- Scientists have been warning that the sea is fast becoming the site of an environmental disaster, the impending collapse of one of the world’s most productive fisheries.
- Now a group of experts that includes geopolitical strategists as well as marine biologists is calling on the disputing parties to come together to manage and protect the sea’s fish stocks and marine environment.
- Effective management hinges on China’s active participation, but it remains unclear whether that country, now the dominant power in the sea with a big appetite for seafood, will cooperate.
While focus is on North Korea, China continues South China Sea buildup: Think tank
WASHINGTON: While attention in Asia has been distracted by the North Korean nuclear crisis in the past year, China has continued to install high-frequency radar and other facilities that can be used for military purposes on its man-made islands in the South China Sea, a US think tank said on Thursday (Dec 14).
Chinese activity has involved work on facilities covering 29 hectares of the Spratly and Paracel islands, territory contested with several other Asian nations, according to the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative of Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies. The report cited satellite images.
