Fresh fish in Vietnam. [Commission]
The European Union said on Monday (23 October) it has given a “yellow card” to Vietnam, warning the Pacific country it could ban seafood exports unless Hanoi does more to tackle illegal fishing.
The European Commission said Vietnam should fix the problem “within a reasonable timeframe” but did not set a deadline.

Coal is on the way out years ahead of schedule in China and India. A recent report by CoalSwarm (an Earth Island Project), Sierra Club, and Greenpeace showed that, in 2016, that Asia’s two fastest growing economies are shutting down mines, scrapping coal plant plans, and building renewables far faster than nearly anyone expected just a few years ago.

LÂM ĐỒNG — The Department of Transport in the Central Highland province of Lâm Đồng reported 200 degraded bridges across the province, threatening the safety of users.
Director of the department, Trương Hữu Hiệp, told Vietnam News Agency that of the degraded bridges, as many as 112 ones were listed as “seriously degraded” and required urgent maintenance.

VietNamNet Bridge – In the first nine months of the year, Vietnam imported $680 million worth of fruits from Thailand, or 60 percent of total fruit imports, according to the General Department of Customs (GDC). And by the end of August 2017, $817.9 million worth of fruit had been sold to China, 73 percent of which was from Thailand.

China is among the biggest export markets for Vietnam’s fruit with the growth rate in the first eight months of the year at 60.2 percent.

Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Record-high foreign reserves will enable Việt Nam’s central bank to keep the đồng, the local currency, stable for the rest of the year, Bloomberg quoted a central bank official as saying.
With reserve levels at US$45 billion, “we are confident we will be able to maintain the đồng’s value,” in 2017, Nguyễn Thị Hồng, deputy governor of State Bank of Việt Nam (SBV), said on the sidelines of a meeting in Hội An last Saturday. “Such a high level of foreign reserves will allow us to step in to stabilise the money market when needed,” she added.

VietNamNet Bridge – Even after accepting students with low entrance exam scores, pedagogical schools are continuing to see a drop in enrollment.

Dak Lak Pedagogical Junior College (3-year training) plans to enroll 400 students this year. After considering applications, the school decided to convene 294 students who got a 12.25-17.25 entrance exam score. However, only 116 students turned up to confirm their studying.
