Filling canals to develop projects raises environmental concerns in Ho Chi Minh City

While lowlands and canal systems are crucial for the drainage of Ho Chi Minh City, large areas of such land plots have been zoned for realty projects, whose developers do not hesitate to fill the waterways to serve construction.

The real estate developers, however, do not violate any laws in doing so as they have been allowed by local authorities to fill canals when obtaining the investment license.

HA NOI (VNS) — Rhino horn demand has decreased by 77 per cent in Ha Noi and 38 per cent across Viet Nam, more than a year after a campaign was launched to eliminate its use.

The numbers show the country’s determination to tackle the long-existing problem, said Nguyen Ba Ngai, deputy head of the Viet Nam Forestry Administration under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Develoment. Continue reading Rhino horn demand plunges →

HCM CITY (VNS) — The free trade agreement being negotiated between Viet Nam and the EU is expected to encourage businesses to reform and update technology, an important factor in promoting green growth in the country, according to the deputy chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee.

amti.csis – On June 16, 2015, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang announced that “as planned, the land reclamation project of China’s construction on some stationed islands and reefs of the Nansha (Spratly) Islands will be completed in the upcoming days.” He went on to note that after land reclamation on existing features was complete, China would continue to construct facilities on its new islands. As of June 17, AMTI assesses that two of China’s land reclamation projects are fully complete, three are nearly complete, and two are ongoing, with active land reclamation still taking place. The map below shows the current status of China’s Spratly building projects.

Although congressional authorization of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) is in limbo now, the House decided to take up the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) bill again by the end of Julyand kept the window of opportunity open. The TPA bill passed the House on June 12 but the TAA bill failed. Both are bundled as one package of a bill, and thus TAA needs to pass the House for the president to sign it. Once they are signed into law, the United States and Japan may conclude bilateral trade talks and that will lead to the conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. Joint participation in TPP presents a significant opportunity for both countries to assume a leadership role in shaping the rules and norms for trade in the Asia Pacific, but TPP is one step in a long process of regional economic integration that will unfold in the years to come. AMTI. CSIS – Within the short span of a year, China’s rapid construction of artificial islands in the disputed Spratlys has radically changed the geographical and security landscapes in the South China Sea.

This island construction has so far created over eight million square metres of real estate in the open sea, outstripping other countries’ reclamation activities by far, and shows no sign of abating. Hundreds of millions of tons of sand and coral have been dredged from the seabed and dumped atop fragile coral reefs that are vital components of the maritime ecology. Ranked third at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games with 73 gold medals, Vietnam has exceeded the target of 60 golds, with many young athletes now aiming to compete at the 2016 Olympics.

Many Vietnamese economists have been raising questions about the actual trade deficit with China, saying that there is a huge mismatch between figures released by the two governments.

At a meeting of the National Assembly last week, Mai Huu Tin from the southern province of Binh Duong raised the issue, pointing out that while Vietnam reported the deficit at US$28.9 billion last year, Chinese statistics pegged it at $43.8 billion. Both the tone and substance of South China Sea discussions in Australian policy circles has undergone an important shift in recent months. What was previously a second-tier security concern to be watched closely and engaged diplomatically, but at a safe distance, has become a heated discussion about concrete responses. Australian policymakers are as concerned as anyone about China’s breakneck land reclamation in the Spratly Islands and the threats, both legal and military, they pose to the global commons. Australian officials and thinkers are seriously considering options to contest Chinese assertiveness, in tandem with the United States and other partners, which would have seemed distant possibilities a year ago. Vietnam is obliged to buy 13 trains from China for Hanoi’s first urban railway line under a bilateral financing agreement, Transport Minister Dinh La Thang said on Tuesday, responding to question about the rationale for the purchase.

The Cat Linh – Ha Dong project is implemented in accordance with an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) arrangement, meaning that Vietnam has to hire Chinese companies for the work and use Chinese equipment, he said. Freebeacon – China will continue building islands in the disputed waters of the South China Sea but a major conflict in the region over the dispute is unlikely, according to a State Department security report.

TTN – A woman and her husband have turned their company into a ‘life university’ which offers former inmates, drug addicts or unruly people in Vietnam a second chance to start their lives afresh, and guides physically and mentally challenged youths toward a brighter future.
