THỪA THIÊN – HUẾ — The former Imperial Palace in Huế will be lit up every night thanks to a light system installed by the Huế Monuments Conservation Centre, the local government body that manages the monuments.

According to centre director Phan Thanh Hải, the lighting of the monument is part of a programme to welcome visitors to the former palace in the evening. Since it first opened to tourists in the 1990s, the UNESCO-recognised site has received visitors only in the daytime. During the night, the palace has remained closed.

Cheap meat imports affecting domestic animal breeders

According to GDC, by mid-March, Vietnam had imported 7,800 tons of pork of different kinds, worth $9.4 million. The figure represented a 16 percent increase in quantity and 21 percent in value compared with the same period last year.

As such, one kilo of imports is priced at $1.2. Post-slaughter by-products were imported at $0.88 per kilo (5,400 tons were imported, worth $4.8 million), while fresh pork was VND42,500 per kilo.

Six years ago in Ca Mau province, the ‘metropolis’ of the aquaculture and seafood processing industry, shrimp shells discharged from processing were in piles as high as a mountain.

Every day, Minh Phu Seafood JSC threw away 50-100 tons of shrimp heads and shells. The mountain of shrimp waste produced a bad odor after being exposed to the sun and rain.

Locals barricade road to save environment in southern Vietnam

Residents in the southern Vietnamese province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau have blocked a local road as a last resort in their battle against the damage and pollution caused by trucks traveling to and from a nearby port.

The barricade first went up around 8:30 am on Wednesday, when residents living along the road leading to the Duc Hanh Inland Port in Tan Phuoc Commune, Tan Thanh District decided they had finally had enough.

HÀ NỘI — Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyễn Xuân Cường has submitted a variety of potential solutions to Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc to help the struggling pig-farming industry recover.

The move comes after the price of live pigs kept falling, dropping to VNĐ30,000 (US$1.32) per kilo in recent months. With no indication of an end to this downward spiral, pig breeders across the country are facing losses, the Infonet online newspaper reported.

Villagers hold police officers captive outside Hanoi
