Tháng ba, sau nhiều năm chịu đựng mùi hôi của phân lợn, Nguyễn Thị Bông, 47 tuổi, cùng những phụ nữ thôn 5, xã Phú An, huyện Tân Phú, tỉnh Đồng Nai, kéo nhau lên Ủy ban Nhân dân xã khiếu nại một trại nuôi lợn.
“Không thể thở nổi. Ban đêm đi ngủ còn phải đeo khẩu trang”, Bông ngồi bên hiên nhà kể lại, trong một buổi chiều tháng sáu hiếm hoi có thể mở toang cửa nhà đón gió hè. “Cái mùi ấy hôi tanh nồng nặc làm tôi đau đầu, choáng váng”.
Năm 2014, trại lợn quy mô 10.000 con cùng các hố chứa chất thải lộ thiên mọc lên cạnh nhà bà. Chất thải dẫn ra từ trang trại sớm nhuộm đen ao cá gần nhà. Trong khi đàn ông, người trẻ trong làng đi học, đi làm xa, những phụ nữ trung niên làm việc tại nhà như Bông hứng chịu nhiều nhất sự ô nhiễm này.
Trại lợn đã rút cạn bầu không khí trong lành của một vùng quê với đồi núi bao bọc. Không chỉ mỗi ngôi làng của Bông ngạt thở trong chất thải chăn nuôi. Có hàng loạt ngôi làng như vậy ở Đồng Nai, cũng như trên khắp Việt Nam. Sự bùng nổ của đàn lợn đã không đi cùng với khả năng xử lý chất thải, đe dọa môi trường tự nhiên, sức khỏe và sinh kế của người dân bản địa.

| Top of the Agenda G20 Summit Focuses on Ukraine War A draft communiqué from today’s Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Bali, Indonesia, said “most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine” and its consequences for the world economy, the Financial Times reported. The draft also denounced using or threatening to use nuclear weapons. Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the summit, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared in a video address. Deals on climate policy and funding were also announced, with the U.S. and Indonesian presidents unveiling a $20 billion plan (Bloomberg) to move Indonesia away from coal power. Ahead of the summit, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Indonesia said they will cooperate on forest preservation (Reuters). The countries collectively contain more than half the world’s tropical rain forests. |

| Top of the Agenda Biden, Xi Hold First In-Person Meeting U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping signaled an interest in improving cooperation (Nikkei) on global issues during their first in-person meeting of Biden’s presidency. The meeting lasted three hours, and they also discussed policy toward Taiwan (NYT), China’s human rights record, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a White House readout. The readout said Biden told Xi that U.S. policy toward Taiwan has not changed, and that Washington objects to Beijing’s “coercive and increasingly aggressive reactions” toward the island. The leaders spoke in Bali, Indonesia, where they will attend the Group of Twenty (G20) summit this week. Their meeting comes amid tensions related to U.S. restrictions on China’s chip sector and Chinese military drills that followed U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August. |

Not long ago, FTX was one of the world’s largest trading platforms for cryptocurrencies. Founded in 2019, the Bahamas-based crypto exchange had a meteoric rise to prominence, and was valued at more than US$30 billion earlier this year.
All that has changed in the past two weeks. First, concerns emerged about links between FTX and an asset-trading firm called Alameda Research, including suggestions that customers’ funds have been transferred from FTX to Alameda.
A few days later, rival firm Binance (the biggest crypto exchange) announced it would sell its holdings of FTT tokens, a crypto that reportedly comprises much of Alameda’s assets.
Panicked customers rushed to withdraw funds from FTX, and the company is now on the brink of collapse, with a banner message on its website announcing it is “currently unable to process withdrawals”.

World leaders are converging in Phnom Penh this weekend for the first in a series of international summits in Southeast Asia over the coming week, where divisions between major powers and conflict threaten to overshadow talks.
The first stop is the Cambodian capital where leaders from across the Indo-Pacific will meet alongside a summit of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders, followed next week by a meeting of the Group of 20 (G20) leaders in Bali and of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Bangkok.

Bich Thao and her husband are still trying to get a son after seven years and five in vitro fertilization attempts despite knowing sex selection is illegal.
The couple, both 34 and from the northern Vinh Phuc Province, say they have been unlucky in that all five IVF attempts failed either to faulty embryos or a faulty Y (male) chromosome.
Thao married her husband in 2010 and their first child was a girl. With her husband being the oldest son, the expectation is that she, too, will produce a male heir.

Hundreds of elephants, wildebeests, and zebras have died across Kenya amid the nation’s longest drought in decades.
“The Kenya Wildlife Service Rangers, Community Scouts, and Research Teams counted the deaths of 205 elephants, 512 wildebeests, 381 common zebras, 51 buffalos, 49 Grevy’s zebras, and 12 giraffes in the past nine months,” a report released Friday by the country’s Ministry of Tourism said.

Số liệu của Hãng FiinRatings cho thấy dư nợ trái phiếu doanh nghiệp tính đến thời điểm cuối tháng 9-2022 là hơn 1,3 triệu tỉ đồng (tương đương hơn 13% GDP năm 2021).

According to the Vietnam Sanitary and Phytosanitary Notification Authorities and Enquiry Point (SPS Vietnam Office), RASFF – Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the European Union (EU) has just sent a warning notice, stating that the product of frozen ground bitter leaves of An Van Co., Ltd. Thinh (Address: 60 Ly Thuong Kiet, Ward 1, Bao Loc City, Lam Dong Province) was found to have exceeded the maximum residue level (MRL) of many active ingredients and banned substances.
