Bài hát được ban nhạc Beatles trình diễn, John Lennon và Paul McCartney sáng tác, phát hành vào tháng 8-1966.

Tên của bài hát được ghép từ tên của nữ diễn viên Eleanor Born và tên của cửa hàng “Rigby and Evens Ltd Wine and Spirit Shippers”. Sự kết hợp nghe có vẻ dễ chịu đối với Paul McCartney, người  sáng tác chủ yếu bài hát này. Eleanor Born từng đóng một vai trong clip “Help!” của ban nhạc Beatles.

Khi Paul McCartney nghĩ ra dòng đầu tiên “nhặt gạo trong nhà thờ nơi mới có đám cưới”, dòng này đã truyền cảm hứng cho toàn bộ câu chuyện của bài hát này: bài hát về những người cô đơn.

Ý tưởng về người già và cô đơn đến từ trải nghiệm thời thơ ấu của Paul McCartney. Anh nói trong một cuộc phỏng vấn, “Có một người phụ nữ sống gần mình ở số 20 đường Forthlin, nơi mình thường đến và mua đồ cho bà, chỉ vì mình đang trên đường đến cửa hàng. Mình chỉ ghé qua, mình biết bà. Chúng mình trở thành những người bạn khá tốt và bà là một bà già cô đơn.”

Báo nhạc Rolling Stone xếp bài hát này hạng 138 trong 500 bài hát hay nhất mọi thời đại.
