Young people all over are avidly following what some have called “the first TikTok war.” In late February, we created a place on our site for teenagers to react to the invasion, and within a week, over 900 had. This comment from Winn Godier, a high school student in North Carolina, echoes what we have heard from many teenagers:

Hong Kong (CNN)In a year when all Xi Jinping craved was for things to be stable, 2022 is shaping up to be anything but.

After years of careful preparation, the Chinese leader is expected to step into an almost unprecedented third term at the helm of the country and its Communist Party this fall.

But instead of a smooth ride, dual crises are threatening to upend the status-quo, with China’s largest outbreak of Covid-19 in two years emerging at home while overseas, Russia embarks on a brutal, widely denounced invasion of Ukraine.

One of the UK’s largest architecture firms has unveiled plans for a verdant new “city within a city” in Vietnam.

The new 290-acre (about half a square mile) district will be built around a long “spine” of trees and greenery in the country’s biggest metropolis, Ho Chi Minh City, according to architects Foster + Partners.

Called “The Global City,” the project includes high- and low-rise residential buildings, public housing and villas, in addition to schools, a shopping mall and medical facilities. Flanked by two waterways, the community will comprise five different neighborhoods connected by a central park and boulevard, as well as a series of pedestrian bridges.

Summary

  • Myanmar, also known as Burma, has suffered decades of repressive military rule, widespread poverty, and civil war with ethnic minority groups.
  • The transition away from full military rule starting in 2011 spurred hopes of democratic reforms. But the military maintained control over much of the government and began a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya.
  • The military launched a coup in February 2021 and then cracked down on protests. The opposition formed a shadow government and fighting force, leading to a civil war and humanitarian crisis that could spill over Myanmar’s borders.

Ukraine has come under a full-blown invasion by the Russian military since Putin’s 24 February 2022 shock announcement of a “special military operation” in the country’s south-eastern Donbass region. The conflict has already caused market jitters, commodity price hikes, and exacerbated supply chain disruptions. It has also prompted a well-planned and coordinated effort by major US, European, and Asian economies to raise the economic costs for Putin. The key ones being:

The Oxford English Dictionary defines “war” as: (1) A state of armed conflict between different countries or different groups within a country; (2) a state of competition or hostility between different people or groups, or (3) a sustained campaign against an undesirable situation or activity. There are many possible reasons for war to begin between—or more often, within—nations. Among these are economic gain, territorial gain, religion, nationalism, civil war, and political revolution. Often, countries’ leaders become primary motivators of conflict by instigating a territorial dispute, trying to control another country’s natural resources, or exercising authoritarian power over people.

In a couple of weeks, Bangladesh will celebrate the golden jubilee of its victory in the liberation war against Pakistan. Fifty years have passed since it became independent, and secular nationalist forces gained the upper hand over religious ones in the war. However, Bangladesh has not been able to secure its secularism.
