1 in 7 babies worldwide born with a low birthweight – The Lancet Global Health, UNICEF, WHO

NEW YORK/ LONDON/ GENEVA/HANOI, 16 May 2019 – More than 20 million babies were born with a low birthweight (less than 2500g; 5.5 pounds) in 2015 – around one in seven of all births worldwide, according to the latest research undertaken by theLondon School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO), published in The Lancet Global Health journal. Data from the report showed that Viet Nam has had the lowest low-birthweight rate in South East Asia & Oceania at 8.2 per cent in 2015.
