Mất rừng phòng hộ đầu nguồn thường dẫn đến lũ quét và sạt lở đất, thiệt hại nghiêm trọng nhân mạng và tài sản, nên cần ngăn chặn tốc độ mất rừng quá nhanh như hiện nay.
Vấn đề này đã được trình bày trong hội thảo “Rừng phòng hộ tại Việt Nam: Giải pháp quản lý, bảo vệ và phục hồi nhằm đảm bảo an ninh môi trường”, do Trung tâm Con người và Thiên nhiên (PanNature), Cơ quan Hợp tác Phát triển Đức (GIZ)-Việt Nam và Trung tâm Nghiên cứu Lâm nghiệp Nhiệt đới (Tropenbos Việt Nam), phối hợp với Vụ Quản lý Rừng đặc dụng và Rừng phòng hộ (TCLN) đồng tổ chức ngày 7/12/2017 tại Hà Nội. Cantonal Hojancha was once a major cattle ranching region. Most of this area was cleared for pasture only 30 years ago. Now, many of the residents have moved into the service industry, and the pasture land has slowly converted back to forest. Photo by Aaron Minnick (World Resources Institute)
New analysis from The Nature Conservancy, WRI and others estimates that stopping deforestation, restoring forests and improving forestry practices could cost-effectively remove 7 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, or as much as eliminating 1.5 billion cars—more than all of the cars in the world today!

VietNamNet Bridge – The ‘mountain of electronic waste’ in Vietnam is receiving an additional 100,000 tons of waste each year.
The recycling activities carried out in Vietnam are just preliminary treatment, as the country still cannot make refined materials for production.
Thirty years ago, TV sets were luxury products for Vietnamese. But now, one family may own 2-3 TV sets and change TVs once every several years. This has resulted in an increasingly high volume of electronic waste.

When China halted plans for more than 100 new coal-fired power plants this year, even as President Trump vowed to “bring back coal” in America, the contrast seemed to confirm Beijing’s new role as a leader in the fight against climate change.

Wild animals and their parts have been found hidden among agricultural products exported to China according to a recent report from Ministry of Finance to the government.
Police seize a large number of ivory imported to Vietnam
The illegal trading of wild animals which mostly come from Africa is carried out by air and waterways through Laos, Cambodia to Vietnam, and then by road from Vietnam to China, the report said.
“The smugglers often hide the frozen animals or animal parts including ivory, tiger bones, or rhino horn among agricultural products being exported to China through border gates or open roads between the two countries.

The volume of discarded electronics in East and South-East Asia jumped almost two-thirds between 2010 and 2015, and e-waste generation is growing fast in both total volume and per capita measures, new UNU research shows.
Driven by rising incomes and high demand for new gadgets and appliances, the average increase in e-waste across all 12 countries and areas analysed — Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Province of China, Thailand and Vietnam — was 63% in the five years ending in 2015 and totalled 12.3 million tonnes, a weight 2.4 times that of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
China alone more than doubled its generation of e-waste between 2010 and 2015 to 6.7 million tonnes, up 107%.

There are more than 3,000 rivers in Vietnam, provide resources to feed millions of people and bring livelihoods to hundreds of communities. When the rivers change, fishermen and farmers are the first to be affected. By September 2013, more than 800 hydropower projects were planned, more than 250 hydropower projects operated, and more than 200 hydropower projects under construction. By 2013, due to only 21 hydropower projects in 12 provinces, more than 300,000 people were displaced and resettled. How are their lives now…?
