KANDAL, Cambodia: Cambodian fisherman Sles Hiet lives at the mercy of the Mekong: A massive river that feeds tens of millions but is under threat from the Chinese dams cementing Beijing’s physical – and diplomatic – control over its Southeast Asian neighbours.

The 32-year-old, whose ethnic Cham Muslim community live on rickety house boats that bob along a river bend in Kandal province, says the size of his daily catch has been shrinking by the year.

 The United Nations has condemned President Donald Trump’s “racist” description of African nations and Haiti as “shithole countries,” amid global outrage over the vulgar comments.

In a discussion with lawmakers on immigration, Trump reportedly asked why the U.S. should accept more immigrants from Haiti and “shithole countries.”

The United Nations human rights office on Friday rejected his words as “racist” and inciting xenophobia.

Coastal communities are learning about the benefits of climate-smart aquaculture and integrated coastal farming systems. More quantitative evidence of these practices is now being documented.

Many coastal communities in Vietnam’s North and North Central Coast (NNCC), one of the poorest regions in the country, rely on coastal aquaculture, particularly integrated aquaculture farming systems for their livelihoods and sustenance. However, climate change and its impacts have negatively affected coastal aquaculture recently by increasing the risks of disease outbreaks and crop failures.

VietNamNet Bridge – The value of Vietnam’s exports to the US increased from $1 billion in 2001 to $38.46 billion in 2016, and it may reach $40 billion in 2017.

Vietnam last year was the 13th largest exporter to the US, with export turnover increasing by 14.9 percent compared with 2015.However, many Vietnamese exporters complain it is becoming more difficult to export products to the US.

Bich Chi, specializing in rice products, has stopped selling its goods to New York and has found it difficult to approach supermarket chains in other states in the US.
