Mary’s trust

Dear brothers and sisters,

Mary, Jesus’ mother, trusted in God.

When the angel said to her, “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

(Luke 1:26-38)

Mary trusted in God.

She was only 16 years old at that time. However, when God wants her to give birth, and give birth without a husband, she agreed.

Do you dare to give birth when you are 16 years old? Moreover, giving birth without a husband? You would lose your reputation. Actually in the old days you might be stoned to death. You might have to feed a child alone, and both might have to live in hunger and thirst.

(In those days, if a Jewsish woman gave birth without a husband, she would be stoned to death. To Vietnam for at least the past 1,000 years, if a woman gives birth without a husband, she would  lose her reputation, lose her dad and mom, and lose her homeland. Her head would be shaven and painted with lime.  She would be put on a raft and pushed away into a river… If the woman and the child are alive, both may have to live in hunger and thirst, and the child can hardly go to school and get married.)

Can you do it for God?

Mary did.

Perhaps Mary was worried. She didn’t know where this road would go, but she still followed God’s will because she believed in God.

Let us put our life in God’s hands, trusting in God, and asking God to make us brave so that we can go where God wants us to go.

Have a nice day.
