Vietnam continues to quietly upgrade its facilities in the Spratly Islands, though apparently without facing the same reaction from China’s maritime militia forces as the Philippines recently has. Vietnam occupies 49 outposts spread across 27 features in the vicinity of the Spratly Islands. Of those 27 features, only 10 can be called islets while the rest are mostly underwater reefs and banks.
Spratly Island is the largest of Vietnam’s outposts and the administrative center of its presence in the area. In 2015-16, Vietnam undertook an expansion of the island to extend its small runway and create a protected harbor.
Proposals to change recommendations and curb conspiracies were sacrificed for engagement, staff say.

When even winning is losing. The surprising cost of defeating Philip Morris over plain packaging
By Pat Ranald
Australia scored a victory over the tobacco giant Philip Morris in the High Court in 2012. The court held that Australia’s plain cigarette packaging lawswere legal and did not constitute an unjust confiscation of trademarks and intellectual property. Philip Morris had to pay all of Australia’s costs.

The impossible ideas have been coming true
because I believe in you.

MORE ON SOUTH CHINA SEA
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has warned China to back off from a disputed island in the South China Sea, warning of possible military action if Beijing “touches” it amid rising tensions over the key waterway.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the plastic crisis, more and more people are saying no to plastic straws. To combat the issue, people all over the world have come up with new, more sustainable materials to make straws from. Most recently, a young Vietnamese entrepreneur released a straw made of wild grass, which has been taking off on social media.

Code of conduct negotiating draft seen by Reuters shows Hanoi wants Beijing’s blockades and island building outlawed.
Tough negotiations lie ahead over a new pact between China and Southeast Asian nations aimed at easing tensions in the South China Sea, as Vietnam pushes for provisions likely to prove unpalatable to Beijing, documents reviewed by Reuters news agency suggest.
