What have I been doing

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

When I opened ĐCN in Feb. 2009, 15 years ago, I had a general idea what positive thinking was, but I was not sure how far I had to go to be honest to myself and to the world, because many people talked about positive thinking and most of them were negative. I knew I would have to show people what true positive thinking was, but I wan’t sure how far I had to go. What I am writing today, I didn’t really think about at that time, although I had had enough knowledge then – I was thinking maybe I wouldn’t have to go that far. Since then, the experience has shown me that I would have to go all the way to God, Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and the saints to really help folks reach true positive thinking. Anything short of that is not positive enough. Writing about positive thinking for 15 years has helped me undertand the depth of positive thinking and the necessity of going to the roots and the foundation of positive thinking in order to complete my job of bringing positive thinking to some brothers and sisters.

Don’t go with the masses

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Most people of the world make a huge mistake – they go with the masses. Whatever numerous people do, they would consider as correct, right, standard. In the Vietnamese culture, we have the quintessential phrase “Không giống ai” (not like anyone). If you are không giống ai, you are wrong or, at least, weird. If you do something không giống ai, you are nutty in the head. Continue reading Don’t go with the masses

When you’re sick

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

When you’re sick, you’re tired. The body doesn’t want to move. It wants to stay in bed and sleep. Because it’s out of energy? Obviously. But the truth is that, your body is not out of energy – it is using all its energy to fight against your illness and help you recover. In short, your body is using every bit of your energy to help you recover. It wants you to sleep, not wasting energy on anything else, so that it can work on your recovery.

So, my friends, when you’re sick, you need to rest, so that your body has enough energy to heal you.

Same thing with spiritual illness. When you sick, rest. Continue reading When you’re sick

What are you improving ?

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I know that everyone of us is working to improve ourself. The question is “improving what?”

Most of us try to improve doctoring skills, lawyering skills, engineering skills, selling skills, teaching skills… but the most important skill, the mother of al other skills, few people pay serious attention to. That is the skill to keep a pure heart. Continue reading What are you improving ?

Take care of God

Dear brothers and sisters,

We often think that God takes care of us. Yes, God does. However, do we think we need to take care of God too?

Jesus said:

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Continue reading Take care of God

Ups and downs

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Life is ups and downs constantly.

When you’re on the way up, you jump around happily. When you’re down, you lie on bed feeling close to death.

That is normal, but no one feels normal, especially when they go down. In addition, everyone will agree with me that your tough days are much more numerous than your easy days. Say, marriage, the peak of marriage life is the wedding celebration and the honeymoon. From the peak, you can’t go any higher and can only go down. Two persons living together may have all kinds of problems very quickly and these problems come in long series – one gives birth to the next, each problem is a mother of a long chain of childrens, and each child soon becomes a mother too. Problems can spread with a geometric progression aka exponential growth. Continue reading Ups and downs

Learning positive spirituality

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Many people do want to learn how to live a positive spiritual like. The problem is that they read about so many things, which overwhelm them. Just confusion and fear.

But the learning is much simpler.

  • Jesus says two sentences called Two Greatest Commanments to convey all his teachings: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39).

These two Greatest Commandments go together: you need to love God, before you can love all people, because many people are unloveable – without God you shall not have enough strength to love all people.

  • The Buddhists say there are 84 thousand methods (pháp môn) to achieve Enlightenment. You just need one, say, non-attachment aka non-grasping aka non-sticking. If you don’t attach to anything, you shall be Enlightened. Ưng vô sở trụ nhi sanh kỳ tâm – non-attaching to anywhere, the Enlightened heart shall be born.

Just focus on one method and don’t worry about other thousands of methods, you shall not be confused and overwhelmed and shall reach Enlightenment.

  • Or you can practice honesty about everything to everyone at everytime, here and now. You shall gain Enlightenment and purify your heart.

These are spiritural rules to help you gain Enlightenment and suscess in whatever you do, be that selling bánh mì or teaching or doctoring.

The way of positive spirituality is extremely simple. You want to be successful in your soul and in your work, you shall succeed, however you define success.

With compassion,

Naked I came and naked I will depart

Dear brothers and sisters,

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
    and naked I will depart.
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.” (Job 1:21).

God gives us reputation and God takes away,
God gives us wealth and God takes away,
God gives us family and God takes away,
God gives us health and God takes away… Continue reading Naked I came and naked I will depart

The Matter of Talking

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We try to think carefully before we talk, to make sure the listeners agree with us. Talking is an art – what to talk, when to talk, how to start the introduction, what is the main part, how to conclude, what kind of language to use – formal or informal, what clothes to wear, what to avoid mentioning… Everyone of us use many of these considerations when we talk to parent, teacher, friend, the bank, boss, customer, client… Talking is a very high art of advocacy.

But probably you all have experienced that whatever you try, it’s usually clumsy and uncomfortable and seems not working. You feel like all your trying has little effect and you could do a better job by not trying all those techniques.

Why?

The first reason is what when you have to worry about so many techniques at the same time, none of the techniques comes out well. Also, you can’t concentrate on the content of the talk.

The second reason is that regardless of how much you try to hide, if you are not sincere, your insincerity will show through for the world to see; all the external conversation techniques cannot hide it.

What does that mean to us?

It means that, firstly, your inner thinking and attitude will always be apparent for the world to see.

Secondly, therefore, you always want to make sure you have good thinking and good attitude about your conversational partner and the subject matter. Let your natural inner thinking and attitude present themselves in your aura. They will do the advocacy for you.

Thirdly, you focus 100% on conversation, and nothing else. That is every-minute Zen.

I often have many meetings – opposing counsel, CEO of a company to negotiate a contract… Before I walk into the meeting room, I always pray: “Father, the folks I am meeting today are my friends. My job is to support them to find a common solution. They are not my opponents and enemies. Please work with me and don’t let me go off track.” With that attitude, I negotiate very well in any setting.

Many people have said to me the first time they met me: “You have a very sincere and trustworthy look. You must be very successful.” I know that they were not flattering, because in my heart, I was very honest to them and respectful toward them.

Obviously, many people can read your aura.

So, if you’re smart, have the right heart, and let you heart and your aura do the advocacy each time you talk.

With compassion,

Hoành
