Dear brothers and sisters,
Staying at home because of Covid-19 can make us unhappy. But when staying at home with God, our life is meaningful.
God is Ông Trời, Buddha, Bodhisattva, Jesus, Thiên Chúa…
Our life is meaningful or not, not because of what we do, or where we are, but because who we are with.
When we’re with God, whatever we do, wherever we are, our life is meaningful. Although we do tiny or great things, earning a lot of money or no money, having a lot of knowledge or nothing, being at home or at work…, when we’re with God, our life is meaningful. Moreover, being with God, we generate true blessings, for all people and the world.
Being with God, our heart becomes purer and calmer. And the true merit is that our heart becomes pure, empty and calm. So being with God is the true merit.
Although we do tiny or great things, earning a lot of money or no money, having a lot of knowledge or nothing, being at home or at work…, when we’re with God, we make the true merit.
To know a thing has merit or not, let’s listen to the talk between Bodhidharma and Emperor Wu of Liang.
Bodhidharma was the 28th Indian patriarch, and the first Chinese patriarch, of Zen Buddhism. Emperor Wu of Liang was the emperor of China and the promoter of Buddhism.
Bodhidharma was from India to China and met Emperor Wu of Liang. Emperor Wu asked the Indian monk:
– “Since I came to the throne, I have built many pagodas, published numerous scriptures and supported countless monks and nuns. Have I any merit?”
– “No merit.”
– “Because the deeds you have done are tainted causes, which produce only small effects in the realms of humans and celestials, like reflection depending on image, appearing but not real.
– “What is the true merit?”
– “The mind must be completely purified, the nature must be empty and calm. That is merit and this merit cannot be gained by doing the worldly works (such as building pagodas, publishing scriptures, supporting monks and nuns).
This is true merit – The mind must be completely purified. The nature must be empty and calm.
So the true merit is the heart that is pure, empty and calm.
How to have an empty, calm and pure heart?
Many ways. And an easy way is to be with God. You don’t need to try practicing hard. You only say, “Dear God, I want to be with you”, God will be with you. And your heart will become purer and calmer.
You can be with God anywhere any time. And a time of staying at home because of Covid-19 is a good time to be with God, and to make the true merit for all people and the world.
Have a good time.
