An ‘other’ reflects on the ways in which he and many others feel they belong, why Vietnam is home.

I have spent over 40 percent of my adult life outside of my home country, never content with having my soul controlled by geography, to paraphrase George Santayana. I carry a U.S. passport but it doesn’t define me. I am a U.S. ex-patriot and global citizen who calls Vietnam home.

It was during my first visit to Hanoi 23 years ago this month that this country – with its tragic yet inspirational millennia-long history – cast its spell on me.  After moving here in 2005, I joined a select group of expats – an estimated 100,000 of them, according to official sources – who live in the midst of 97 million Vietnamese.

Giêsu ơi,

Em nguyện trở thành khí cụ bình an của Giêsu.

Amen.

What do you want to do with your life?

I’ve started considering myself not a youngster anymore but a young-at-heart mature adult. Nonetheless, starting my adulthood, I’ve realized there are so many youngsters who keep wondering that they don’t really know what they want to do with their life. So many questions like: What major should I study in college? What kind of career I should follow in the future? What skills I need to equip myself with in order to survive in this crazy world?…

Many youngsters and students have shared with me that such unanswered questions even make them anxious, stressed, and so worried about their future. Continue reading What do you want to do with your life?

Giêsu ơi,

You là Tình Yêu (1 John 4:8).

Amen.

United Nations — A new U.N. report warns “the number of human trafficking victims is on the rise” as criminal gangs and terror groups prey increasingly on women and children to make money and bolster their numbers. The 90-page Global Trafficking in Persons report says that children, who account for 30 percent of all trafficking victims, include “far more” girls than boys.

Google fine launches new era in privacy enforcement

The search giant is the first big tech company to feel the full brunt of GDPR enforcement. It won’t be the last.

Eight months after Europe imposed sweeping new privacy rules, France has opened a new chapter in data protection — one of sanctions, fines and tough enforcement.

Not only has France’s CNIL data watchdog issued the largest ever financial penalty for a privacy breach in Europe — €50 million — it also chose the biggest possible target for enforcement — a Silicon Valley giant whose success was built on harvesting the personal data of millions to sell targeted ads.

The shortcut?

Dear brothers and sisters,

I have heard many times the Vietnamese expression of the modern day: “Đi tắt đón đầu” – Taking the shortcut to gain a head start. It sounds similar to a very common guerrilla warfare tactic: taking the shortcut to lie in wait upfront. My problem is that in business, more often than not, this expression appears to work in a contorted way into the unethical get-rich-quick minds of the crime-oriented individuals. Reuters JANUARY 7, 2019 / 1:26 AM / 19 DAYS AGO

BEIJING (Reuters) – A U.S. guided-missile destroyer sailed near disputed islands in the South China Sea in what China called a “provocation” as U.S. officials joined talks in Beijing during a truce in a bitter trade war.

China’s air force is working on two new stealth bombers to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-era Xian H-6 bombers, a new US intelligence report says. While Beijing confirmed the existence of one, the B-2 Spirit-like H-20, in October, the second is being called the JH-XX by observers and is rumored to be a medium bomber.
