The photos – taken for Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) – show construction on Mischief Reef, one of the artificial islands China has built in the Spratly archipelago, Reuters reported.
The images show infrastructure matching similar work China has done on two other reefs, said Greg Poling, director of CSIS’s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI).

City Century
Why Municipalities Are the Key to Fighting Climate Change
By Michael Bloomberg

Although history is not usually taught this way, one could argue that cities have played a more important role in shaping the world than empires. From Athens and Rome to Paris and Venice to Baghdad and Beijing, urban ideas and innovators have left indelible marks on human life. By concentrating the brainpower of humanity in relatively small geographic areas, cities have promoted the kinds of interactions that nurture creativity and technological advances. They have been the drivers of progress throughout history, and now—as the knowledge economy takes full flight—they are poised to play a leading role in addressing the challenges of the twenty-first century.

CogitASIA – The U.S. administration’s rebalance toward Asia is fundamental to U.S. economic, commercial, and security interests and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is the fulcrum for the economic pivot. Although facing headwinds typical in the end game of trade negotiations, the smart money is on the TPP delivering the most advanced trade agreement ever.

On 4 August 2015, the EU and Vietnam reached an agreement in principle for a free trade deal. Negotiations for an ambitious and comprehensive FTA were launched in June 2012 with a view to ensuring an effective environment for trade and investment relations.
The EU and Vietnam still need to settle remaining technical issues and finalise the legal text. Once finalised, the agreement will need to be approved by the Council and the Parliament.

Luckily for animals like the langurs and the gibbons, their forest homes are going to get more protection.
This will be happening because of an agreement between Viet Nam government agencies and an international environmental organisation.
It will mean that more work will be done to help guards who protect the forests from people wishing to destroy them and the creatures that live in them.

“I want my son to live a happy, normal life like all other children. And I’ll be there to watch him grow up.”
August 2015—When Hieu Trinh Thi married five years ago, she knew that her husband Truong might be HIV positive since he had been an intravenous drug user in the past. In Hai Phong, Vietnam, where the couple lives, 44 percent of people who inject drugs are infected with the virus.
Hieu knew too that she was at risk of contracting HIV from Truong, if she hadn’t already. But the abstract idea of the virus didn’t outweigh her love for the motorbike taxi driver, and the couple wed in the fall of 2010.

Viet Nam should be proud of its record in promoting economic growth and poverty reduction, United Nations resident co-ordinator Pratibha Mehta told Viet Nam News Agency.

On September 2, 1945, in the Declaration of Independence to establish the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, President Ho Chi Minh quoted the US Declaration of Independence saying: “All men are created equally. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”. Throughout the past 70 years, Viet Nam has been striving for a better life for its people. What would be your comments on Viet Nam’s efforts in promoting human rights, especially with regard to economic growth and poverty reduction? To be continued on CVD
