Nguồn gốc Thanksgiving (Lễ Tạ Ơn)

Hôm nay, thứ Năm lần thứ tư của tháng 11, là ngày Lễ Tạ Ơn ở Mỹ. Lễ Tạ Ơn có nguồn gốc từ năm 1621, thời điểm đầu tiên của những người tị nạn Âu Châu đến lập nghiệp ở Thế Giới Mới và tạo thành nước Mỹ sau này.

Năm 1620, 102 người của 8 giáo hội ly khai khỏi Anh giáo, một số đang ở Anh và một số đang tị nạn ở Hà Lan, thuê một chiếc tàu tên là May Flower để sang Mỹ Châu lập nghiệp. May Flower rời Southhampton, Anh quốc, ngày 6 (hay 16?) tháng 9, gặp tàu Speedwell tại điểm hẹn để nhận một số người từ Hà Lan, tổng cộng Mayflower chở 102 hành khách và khoảng 25 đến 30 người thủy thủ đoàn. Sau 66 ngày hành trình gian khổ đến nỗi hai người đã thiệt mạng, tàu đến nơi (mà ngày nay là cảng Provincetown Harbor ở Cape Cod, bang Massachusetts) ngày 11 (hay 21?) tháng 11. In Tao Te Ching (Đạo Đức Kinh), Lao Tzu (Lão Tử) said, the highly virtuous person is like water, looking for the low place to dwell. Chapter 8, about virtuous person, reads:

 Bậc thượng thiện giống như nước;
Nước thì hay làm lợi cho vạn vật mà không tranh,
Ở chỗ mà người người đều ghét,
Nên gần với Đạo.
Ở thì hay lựa chỗ thấp;
Lòng thì chịu chỗ thâm sâu;
Xử thế thì thích dùng đến lòng nhân;
Nói ra thì trung thành không sai chạy,
Sửa trị thì chịu làm cho được thái bình.
Làm việc thì hợp với tài năng,
Cử động thì hợp với thời buổi.
Ôi vì không tranh, Nên không sao lầm lỗi  		   The highly virtuous person is like water.
Water give life to the ten thousand things and does not fight.
It flows in places men reject, so is like the Tao.
In dwelling, choose the low places.
In meditation, go deep in the heart.
In dealing with others, be gentle and kind.
In speech, be true.
In ruling, be just.
In daily life, be competent.
In action, be aware of the time and the season.
No fight: No blame.

TTCT – Israel sẽ vừa phải tấn công Gaza vừa phải để một mắt dè chừng phía bắc nước này, nơi giáp giới Lebanon và có lực lượng Hezbollah mạnh gấp nhiều lần Hamas đang hoạt động.

Đây là cửa hàng tạp hóa thứ ba mà tôi ghé. Nó ở gần trung tâm thành phố Beirut và chỉ cách Trường đại học American, Beirut khoảng nửa cây số, là chỗ xập xình hàng quán ngày đêm sinh viên ăn chơi. 

Nhưng đây là khu dân cư đi ngủ sớm, chứ không phải phố đi bộ chớp nháy đèn. Tôi vào bên trong lấy mấy chai bia lạnh. Khi ra quầy tính tiền, tôi nói với ông chủ tiệm là hai cửa hàng tôi mới ghé đều không có bia. Ông nhìn thẳng vào mắt tôi và nói thật đanh thép: “Ở cửa hàng này, tôi bảo đảm là ông sẽ luôn tìm được bia rượu!”.

NEW DELHI (AP) — Manju Devi suffered in pain for two months last year as she worked on a farm near Delhi, unable to break away from duties that sometimes had her standing for hours in the waist-deep water of a rice paddy, lifting heavy loads in intense heat and spraying pesticides and insecticides. When that pain finally became too much to bear, she was rushed to a hospital.

China’s ‘Predatory’ Trawler Fleet And The Fishing Industry’s Dirty Secret

China’s alleged abuse of the world’s oceans was examined in recent studies into its vast fishing fleet, which is accused of destroying maritime ecosystems far from its shores and perpetuating the industry’s forced labor practices.

China-flagged ships on the high seas were involved in “theft on a grand scale, unrestricted warfare on natural resources,” said a report by the SeaLight project, which says it uses “commercially available technology to shed light on the maritime ‘gray zone.'”

Illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing by Chinese vessels was happening throughout the Asia-Pacific, including within other countries’ exclusive economic zones (EEZ), according to SeaLight, which is under Stanford’s Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation.

When Kieu Oanh heard that the latest new drink, hand-pounded lemon tea, had become popular in Hanoi, she did not hesitate to travel 30 km from Bac Ninh to stand in line.

This is not the first time the 24-year-old girl was quick to try out foods that had gone viral on social media. Whenever she discovered a new food or hangout spot within a 200 km radius, she invited her friends to go with her.

“Instead of listening to other people’s experiences, I want to experience it myself,” the office worker said.

Dù qua đời ở tuổi 21 trong một vụ tai nạn ô tô tại Anh năm 1960, Eddie Cochran (3-10-1938 – 17-4-1960) vẫn là người có ảnh hưởng lớn ở Anh.

Những năm đầu tiểu học, mình luôn bị đau đầu khi học, chẳng hiểu tại sao, thế nên mẹ đưa mình đi khám bệnh.

Mẹ đạp xe đạp từ đầu này thành phố đến đầu kia thành phố (Đà Nẵng lúc đó là thành phố thuộc tỉnh Quảng Nam – Đà Nẵng). Dù phải cố gắng ngồi yên sau xe đạp (xe đạp lúc đó không có lắp ghế sau chở bé), không được ngọ nguậy làm mẹ té, phải luôn chú ý hai chân, không để hai chân lọt vào bánh xe làm đứt chân, với em bé 7 tuổi học lớp Hai, được ra ngoài đi chơi là vui rồi, nhằm nhò gì mấy chuyện đó.
