Measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic have also curtailed human trafficking from Vietnam to China, but traffickers are looking for other routes.

In the fall of 2020, when officials in a remote province in China began to check identities to combat Covid transmission, they found a 50-year-old woman in a poor family without any identity papers.

“It turned out she was a Vietnamese victim trafficked to China around 35 years ago,” Dinh Thi Minh Chau, a senior psychologist at the Blue Dragon Foundation, a Hanoi organization that works to rescue trafficking victims, said.

The woman from northern Vietnam had agreed to go with a person in her village to find a job because her family was too poor.

UN – 4 November 2021 – Human Rights

Some women and girls being recruited in Viet Nam to serve as domestic workers in Saudi Arabia, are suffering sexual abuse and torture, leading a group of UN independent human rights experts on Thursday to call on both nations to curb human trafficking. 

“We are seeing traffickers targeting Vietnamese women and girls living in poverty, many of whom are already vulnerable and marginalized. Traffickers operate with impunity”, they said in a statement. 

After signing on with labour recruitment companies in Viet Nam, some girls and women found themselves sexually abused, beaten and subjected to torture and other cruel treatments by employers once they arrived in Saudi Arabia. 

Often these women are denied food and medical treatment, not paid at all, or paid less than stipulated in their contracts.

Tại tọa đàm “Quảng cáo truyền thông có trách nhiệm giới” tại Hà Nội chiều 9-11, các diễn giả nhắc đến quảng cáo xe hơi dùng hình ảnh nữ giới mặc bikini, thể hiện tư duy lỗi thời là sử dụng thân thể phụ nữ hở hang hoặc khỏa thân để quảng cáo những ngành hàng không liên quan. 

Điều cần nhấn mạnh là “không liên quan”, còn với các ngành có liên quan đến làm đẹp hay cơ thể nữ giới thì có tiêu chuẩn riêng để đánh giá.

Hanoi (VNS/VNA) – Gender equality will be added into village codes and conventions – the code of ethics developed by the community that has long played an important role in managing social relations in the community in Vietnam.

Under a new decision by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the village code and convention at every grassroots level in the country will include principles like gender equality in society and family, as well as no gender-based discrimination.

Gender issues must be integrated into law building and enforcement.
