(CNN) Almost four decades on from the collapse of Pol Pot’s tyrannical communist regime, an international tribunal has ruled that the Khmer Rouge committed genocide, a landmark verdict that is hoped will bring closure to millions of Cambodians.

More than 1.7 million people, or approximately a fifth of Cambodia’s population, are believed to have died from forced labor, starvation and execution under the Khmer Rouge which ruled the country between 1975 and 1979.

China must act decisively to eradicate the ivory trade

The continued existence of large stockpiles of legal raw ivory in the country is hampering China’s promises to save the elephant, says Li Zhang.

Kin Cheung /AP/Press Association Images Criminal gangs tried to smuggle this ivory into China from Tanzania.

Nature – The fight against the illegal ivory trade had some success last month with the arrest of a Chinese woman alleged to have smuggled more than 700 elephant tusks from Tanzania. In contrast to the wealth of information about the Jesuits in China and Japan, the parallel story of the Jesuit presence in Vietnam has received modest scholarly attention until recent decades. Even though the Portuguese and Italian Jesuits were instrumental in establishing Christian communities in both the ancient states of Cochinchina and Tonkin that make up the present-day Vietnam, their contribution were not properly acknowledged. Part of the problem is due to the fact that prior to 1945, Vietnam was known to the Western world largely as part of French Indochina, and thus Vietnamese Catholicism was seen in the same light—as an extension of French Catholicism. For three hundred years, from the 1660s to the 1960s, the Catholic Church in Vietnam was largely under the care of the Paris Foreign Mission Society (Missions Étrangères de Paris or MEP).

Prayer 555

The prayer series >>

Jesus,

Which of my prayers is the important prayer?

I think it’s Prayer 413.*

Please take all things in my heart, mind and soul.
I wish they are empty
so that you can put anything you want into them.

Why important?

Because it’s the prayer to be one with you.

Most of my prayers are similar to Prayer 413,
because to be one with you is important to me.

Amen.

PTH
