Vietnamese supermarkets go back to leaves, leaving plastic bags

Several Vietnamese supermarkets have started using banana leaves to wrap vegetables in an effort to reduce plastic waste.

Shoppers at Lotte Mart in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 7 were recently surprised to see scallions, okra and other vegetables produce wrapped in banana leaves.

A representative of the supermarket chain said that the company is experimenting with using leaves to wrap veggies in one outlet, and plans to expand this later to the entire chain in the country.

Viet Nam NewsHÀ NỘI — A new regulation concerning recruitment quotas for public tertiary education institutions in Việt Nam has been at the centre of debate among educators and lawmakers.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) recently decided to use the percentage of students that gained employment after graduation as the basis to determine whether a university should be allowed to increase its recruitment quota for the next academic year.

HÀ NỘI — More than VNĐ28.5 trillion (US$1.23 billion) has been earmarked for a project to protect, restore and sustainably develop forests in the Central Highlands until 2030.

The project, which was approved by Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc last week, aims to cut forest losses and restore the coverage rate to 49.2 per cent, or 2.72 million hectares.

HÀ NỘI – The Secretariat of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Central Committee has issued a new instruction on the need to have Party cells in all private Vietnamese economic entities.

Instruction No 33-CT/TW highlighted Party and Government policies to make private economic entities into a driving force for the country’s socialist-oriented market economy. The document also emphasised the need to develop party cells and mass organisations in any economic entity operating in Việt Nam.

Viet Nam News THỪA THIÊN-HUẾ — Huế authorities have announced plans to evacuate 4,200 families out of the citadel walls and buildings in an attempt to stop illegal lodging on relics.

The People’s Council of Thừa Thiên-Huế Province early this week approved the evacuation plan designed by the local People’s Committee.

Following the approved plan, the evacuation of 4,200 families living illegally on relics built during the Nguyễn Dynasty (1802-1945) in the city will take place in two stages. The first starts this year and is expected to be complete in 2021, removing 2,938 families from on and around the citadel walls and relocating them.

Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — The VNĐ1.08 trillion (US$46.5 million) LIG solar power plant – the first of its kind in the central province of Quảng Trị is expected to become operational in June.

The project’s investor, Licogi 13 Joint Stock Company, has installed 70 per cent of the plant, after having been assigned as the investor for the project by the provincial People’s Committee in June 2018.
