Thailand’s Inequality: Unpacking the Myths and Reality of Isan

June 5, 2019

By Rattana LaoAsia Foundation

For decades, the ethnically and linguistically diverse people of Isan, Thailand, have been the subject of pervasive bias, often described as docile and uneducated, or as “unsophisticated peasants” who can be bought and manipulated by ambitious politicians. Bordered by Laos and the Mekong River to the north and east, and by Cambodia to the southeast, these 20 provinces in Thailand’s northeast have long been the country’s poorest and least fertile region. But Isan is also Thailand’s most populous region, with 22 million inhabitants, 33% of the country’s total population. It is a population that matters deeply to the country’s future prosperity.

Prayer 646

The prayer series

Jesus,

I don’t like Đà Nẵng to become the second Singapore.

Why?

Đà Nẵng needs balance
between urban development and nature protection.
Singapore seems to know only urban development.
Singapore hasn’t got as many natural features as Đà Nẵng.
Singapore seems to know how to do the best with what it has.

However, Đà Nẵng should have a greater dream.

Amen.

Prayer 642

The prayer series

Jesus,

I had wanted to be one with you,
then when you came to be one with me,
I denied you.

Jesus,
you ate and drank with everyone, including sinners;
you befriended everyone, especially the poor and the miserable;
you opened yourself to everyone, including those who hated you.
You said,
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Jesus,
please keep me as a channel of your peace.
(Make me a channel of your peace)

Please keep me calm
so that you may use me as an instrument of your peace works on earth.

Amen.

The Golden Triangle is the world’s second-largest drug producing region, and the effects are being felt in Vietnam.

Elephant tusks are available in many places, from souvenir shops and jewelry shops to tourist sites. But the sales there are very small compared with transactions via online markets.

MT, at No 81-83 Nguyen Van Cu street, is a well known souvenir shop in Buon Ma Thuot City. There are many stalls inside, including a jewelry and souvenir stall which display products made of elephant tusks.
