The Hanoitimes – The causes of the strikes are mainly interest disputes (accounting for 55.22%) and rights disputes (11.94%).
In the first six months of 2019, 67 strikes occurred at foreign-invested enterprises, accounting for 82.1% of the total in Vietnam, according to the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs.
The number of strikes occurred mostly at South Korean, Taiwanese and Chinese enterprises in southern provinces of Vietnam such as Long An, Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Ho Chi Minh City.

VNN – The Ministry of Education and Training have asked the Prime Minister and the Politburo to approve a plan to increase the teaching workforce in 22 provinces.
These localities include 17 with an increase of students and five provinces in the Central Highlands.
However, there are still many provinces which lack several thousand teachers each. The ministry reported that Son La lacks 3,355 teachers, Thai Binh 3,167, Gia Lai 2,572, Thanh Hoa 2,877, Binh Duong 2,811, Kien Giang 1,008 and HCM City 1,290.
A stunning 12 million people could be displaced by flooding in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta within half a century, according to new research led by Philip Minderhoud, a geographer at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Minderhoud and his colleagues arrived at that surprising conclusion after analyzing ground-based measurements of the Mekong’s topography that the Vietnamese government shielded from Western scientists for years. The results, published today in Nature Communications, show the Mekong’s elevation over sea level averages just 0.8 meter, which is almost two meters lower than commonly quoted estimates based on freely available satellite data.

Tokyo (VNA) – A Japanese researcher has just announced a project on training Vietnamese health workers in addressing problems related to Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin chemical that was sprayed on the country during the war.
Japan’s national broadcasting organization NHK quoted Professor Kido Teruhiko from the Kanazawa University and officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency as saying the project will last for three years in the Vietnamese central province of Binh Dinh’s Phu Cat district.

Daniel Kritenbrink has become the first ever U.S. ambassador to Vietnam to visit the Truong Son Cemetery for soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.
More than 10,000 Vietnamese soldiers killed during the war (1955-1975) were laid to rest in the cemetery in Gio Linh District, Quang Tri Province in central Vietnam.

An annual Buddhist festival held earlier this month in the northern Vietnamese city of Hai Phong has attracted environmental criticism as it purportedly involved people setting as many as 30,000 plastic lanterns afloat on a local bay.
On the night of August 10, hundreds of people gathered in Cat Ba Town on Cat Hai Island, a district administered by Hai Phong, to observe Vu Lan Occasion, a festival Buddhist followers hold annually to pay homage to their parents and ancestors.
As part of the celebration, participants joined a ritual to release 30,000 water lanterns to the local Lan Ha Bay.
