Ban on firecrackers violated in Quang Tri

QUANG TRI (VNS) — The police have come across 18 violations of the ban imposed on burning firecrackers in the central Quang Tri Province.

The burning of firecrackers took place in the province’s Lao Bao Township, where the Lao Bao border post is located. Flower Road to be opened today

HCM CITY (VNS) – The Flower Road in HCM City’s Ham Nghi Street will be opened to the public at 7pm today. Workers are putting the finishing touches to perfect the flower arrangements, while young people and children pose beside the beautiful flowers. The flower show will run till February 22, the fourth day of the year of the goat. Viet Nam News photographer Van Dat presents different images of the Flower Road, as seen through his lens.

The Flower Road is ready to receive visitors.

Vietnam’s government has often been criticized for its poor record on religious freedom, but recent events give rise to cautious optimism that small improvements are being made. Roman Catholic Pope Francis’ appointment of Vietnamese archbishop Pierre Nguyen Van Nhon as a new cardinal in January was a boon to the Catholic community in Vietnam and an encouragement for the government to make further improvements. The appointment marks another step in the gradual rapprochement between Vietnam and the Vatican, as Vietnam hopes to reestablish diplomatic relations with the Holy See in the near future. HA NOI (VNS) – Russia’s International Academy of System Studies (IASS) presented two awards to academician Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

Nhan is president and chief executive officer of the Ha Noi-based Advanced International Company.

The Vnexpress online newspaper reported that the awards — one for the academician’s outstanding achievements in the 2004-2014 period, and the Vernadski Star – have been given to Nhan in recognition of her efforts, in collaboration with her associates, in applying 32 of the world’s most advanced technologies successfully in Viet Nam. This, the International Energy Agency said Tuesday, is most definitely not your father’s oil market.

In its annual five-year oil market outlook, the IEA, which is the energy agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), said that the rise of the United States as a heavyweight crude producer, OPEC’s abdication of its historical role as the arbiter of world oil supply, and sluggish oil demand growth worldwide will have big implications for oil producing and consuming countries alike.

Vietnam allows partly paralyzed, jailed blogger to go home

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — A prominent Vietnamese blogger who is partially paralyzed and was jailed two months ago for posting articles that oppose the Communist Party said Wednesday he was released from prison on medical parole.

Blogger and writer Nguyen Quang Lap, 58, said he was still being investigated for allegedly spreading propaganda against the Communist government.
