“Sit here and get rich,” read small medallions embedded in the floor under each white plastic chair in a vast, open-sided meditation center. In his sermons, the temple’s charismatic 72-year-old leader, Phra Dhammachayo, often exhorts his adherents, “Be rich, be rich, be rich!”

ASEAN offers Myanmar humanitarian assistance for Rakhine

YANGON: The 10-member Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Monday (Dec 19) offered Myanmar humanitarian assistance, stressing that aid be distributed to those affected in northern Rakhine state.
Speaking after a closed-door meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers, ASEAN Secretary-General Le Luong Minh said that “we need to help Myanmar overcome this challenge”.

China agrees to return seized US underwater drone

China’s Defence Ministry said it had been in talks with the United States about returning an underwater drone taken by a Chinese naval vessel in the South China Sea, but the US was not helping by “hyping up” the issue.

I met Larry Colburn in 1998 when he and Hugh Thompson returned to Viet Nam for the first time since the war. They met with victims of the My Lai Massacre, including survivors whose lives they helped to save during those awful hours of March 16, 1968.
