Food Giants Announce Major New Labeling Initiative

Most controversially, the label will detailed whether products contain GMOs.

Fortune – Some of the largest food manufacturers and grocers announced today an initiative to provide consumers with “instantaneous access” about detailed information on thousands of products through their smart phones. Shoppers, using their smartphones, will simply scan a code, called a QR code or barcode, according to the initiative by the Grocery Manufacturers Association.

More than 30 food giants, ncluding Pepsi, ConAgra, Hormel, Campbell Soup, Land O’Lakes, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Hershey, and General Foods, have signed on to participate in the SmartLabel Initiative. The SmartLabel will include ingredients, allergens, animal welfare, environmental policies, and, perhaps the most controversial attribute, whether the food contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Nội dung của cuốn phim này đặt trọng tâm vào Monsanto – công ty đa quốc gia Mỹ dẫn đầu ngành công nghệ sinh học trên thế giới – và các sản phẩm biến đổi gen đang được sử dụng rộng rãi.

TN – Từ giữa tháng 3 năm nay, cây bắp biến đổi gien chính thức được trồng đại trà tại VN, dù đây vẫn là vấn đề gây tranh cãi toàn cầu. Theo các chuyên gia, đưa nền nông nghiệp theo hướng này, chúng ta đã đánh mất lợi thế của mình mà không thu lợi được gì.

DMR – WASHINGTON –When Justin Dammann enters his southwestern Iowa cornfield this month, the 35-year-old farmer will sow something these 2,400 acres have not seen in more than a decade — plants grown without genetically modified seeds.

The corn, which will head to a processor 20 miles down the road this fall, will likely make its way into tortilla shells, corn chips and other consumable products made by companies taking advantage of growing consumer demand for food without biotech ingredients. Land grab in Ukraine is Monsanto’s backdoor to the EU

The quest for Ukraine’s legendary black earth is almost complete. To the dismay of French, Polish, German farmers, the multinational agricultural corporation Monsanto, as well as DuPont Pioneer and John Deere, have all lobbied for access to the largest agricultural market in Eastern Europe. This will soon reshape the market for agricultural products in the EU and spell ruin for Europe’s farmers.

In Nov. 2013, the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation drafted a legal amendment that will benefitglobal ag producers by allowing the widespread use of genetically modified seeds. Taking a backseat to the dramatic political developments there, this turn of events went almost unnoticed, although Monsanto has been lobbying within Ukraine’s agricultural market for quite a while. Back in 2007 the US embassy in Kiev demanded that the Ukrainian government take action against sellers of “fake” seeds (i.e., producers competing with Trans National Corporations — TNCs). TT – Ở VN sản phẩm thực phẩm biến đổi gen không được dán nhãn và người tiêu dùng hầu như không được biết các thông tin này. Làm sao họ lựa chọn?
