From dams to basins: mapping across scales

By Kim Gehab

Mekong River, October 13, 2016

CGAIR

mekongeye_At the end of June 2016, WLE Greater Mekong published a series of maps identifying dams on the Irrawaddy, Salween, Mekong, and Red rivers and their tributaries. The maps cover existing dams, dams under construction, planned dams, and cancelled dams; both irrigation dams and hydroelectric dams are mapped, as long as they have a reservoir size of at least 0.5 km2 and/or have an installed capacity of at least 15 megawatts (for hydroelectric dams).

The following is the first half of an interview that took place on 8 July 2016, between Dr Kim Geheb—the WLE Greater Mekong Regional Coordinator — and the editor of Thrive. It is being published here in anticipation of the Great Mekong Forum on Water, Food, and Energy.

ChannelNewsAsia
Posted 12 Apr 2017 14:20

HANOI: Outrage spread to Vietnam on Wednesday over United Airlines’ handling of a passenger dragged from his seat after it emerged that the 69-year-old U.S. doctor was Vietnamese by birth.

Although United Airlines has no direct flights to Vietnam, there were widespread calls on social media for a boycott after video showed a bloodied David Dao being yanked out of the plane by airport security on Sunday to make way for United employees.

The ire in Vietnam grew quickly after it was reported that Dao’s origins were not in the Southeast Asian country’s old enemy, China, as many had at first assumed.

Prayer 119

The prayer series

Jesus,

How many springs, summers, autumns, winters do I need to see
so that I can know all things are what they are not
and only you are who You are?

If I really know these,
perhaps I’ll fly freely in the wide sky.
I’ll not have my house but everywhere will be my house.
I’ll only focus now and here because I know where, what and who is the way, the truth and the life. Continue reading Prayer 119

Written from Vietnam: It’s in the mail!

TuoiTre News Stivi Cooke – Updated : 04/09/2017 10:27 GMT + 7

I knew instantly that I would never see it. Three months after Christmas, I was still waiting for a postcard sent by my mum. As my eldest brother noted over the phone, there was a little bit of Christmas cash tucked inside for me.

Considering that the Vietnamese postal system has always opened every single letter and parcel I’ve ever received, I knew the money would be taken. Although I hoped I’d at least receive the card, minus the cash, it never came.
