Sau biến cố 30 tháng 4, gặp thời thất nghiệp tôi đi phụ hồ, phụ mộc, phụ chạy ống nước… kiếm sống thì quen anh A Chúng, gốc người Quảng Đông, cũng dân học tập cải tạo, từng ở trại hơn chục năm bởi làm bên ngành ANQĐ. Trong đám thợ đi sửa nhà, cất nhà, anh cựu “mất dạy” là tôi khi làm thợ phụ, thợ vịn cho công việc nào đó thì phải mất một ít thời gian mới thạo việc. Còn anh Chúng, cũng gốc lính tráng chứ nào phải thợ thuyền nhưng đã tỏ ra là thợ chuyên nghiệp thật sự khi chúng tôi lãnh chạy ống nước. Đó là anh đã có thể vẽ ra giấy nhanh, gọn các sơ đồ hệ thống nước sinh hoạt sẽ làm và tính luôn ra sẽ cần bao nhiêu thước ống nhựa với kích cỡ nào, bao nhiêu cái cút, măng-xông, rôbinê, tê… (1).

Mình đang ngồi làm việc thì nghe hô lớn: “Cướp, cướp, cướp.” Chừng 3 giây sau lại nghe hô: “Cướp, cướp, cướp.” Những lần khác nghe hô cướp 1 tiếng là mất tiêu, vì anh chàng cướp và người truy đuổi ngồi xe máy phóng ào ào mất hút trong chớp mắt.
