HCM CITY (VNS) – The Flower Road in HCM City’s Ham Nghi Street will be opened to the public at 7pm today. Workers are putting the finishing touches to perfect the flower arrangements, while young people and children pose beside the beautiful flowers. Vietnam’s government has often been criticized for its poor record on religious freedom, but recent events give rise to cautious optimism that small improvements are being made. Roman Catholic Pope Francis’ appointment of Vietnamese archbishop Pierre Nguyen Van Nhon as a new cardinal in January was a boon to the Catholic community in Vietnam and an encouragement for the government to make further improvements. The appointment marks another step in the gradual rapprochement between Vietnam and the Vatican, as Vietnam hopes to reestablish diplomatic relations with the Holy See in the near future. HA NOI (VNS) – Russia’s International Academy of System Studies (IASS) presented two awards to academician Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan in Ha Noi on Wednesday.
Nhan is president and chief executive officer of the Ha Noi-based Advanced International Company.
The Vnexpress online newspaper reported that the awards — one for the academician’s outstanding achievements in the 2004-2014 period, and the Vernadski Star – have been given to Nhan in recognition of her efforts, in collaboration with her associates, in applying 32 of the world’s most advanced technologies successfully in Viet Nam. HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — A prominent Vietnamese blogger who is partially paralyzed and was jailed two months ago for posting articles that oppose the Communist Party said Wednesday he was released from prison on medical parole.
Blogger and writer Nguyen Quang Lap, 58, said he was still being investigated for allegedly spreading propaganda against the Communist government.
