A few weeks ago I was fascinated to learn that local authorities in Da Nang have harnessed the power of social media to make their coastal city cleaner, greener, and more beautiful. People can go online to report a broken lamppost, flooded street or an illegal landfill. By helping to prioritize and direct the authority’s response, it has quickly become a success story for other cities and provinces to learn from.

tuoitrenews – The devastating effects of this year’s severe drought and salinization have forced many residents from Vietnam’s Mekong Delta to leave their hometown and earn their living elsewhere.
According to Tran Sang, an official in Soc Trang Province, previously, the situation was only evident in poorer households.
“Now, the climatic condition has been so serious this year that many citizens have lost thousands of square meters of crops, forcing them to abandon their homes to find work in other provinces,” Sang said.

At the end of a recent ASEAN-China summit in Kunming, China, on June 13, Beijing pressured several ASEAN members close to it to withdraw their support for an ASEAN joint press statement expressing “serious concerns” about recent developments in the South China Sea. These events raised fundamental questions about the ability of the grouping to pull together amid challenges posed by the region’s new strategic realities.

The Ministry of Information and Communications has decided to revoke a press card it has granted a local journalist, accusing him of “seriously damage the reputation” of the defense forces.
In a statement on its website, the ministry said journalist Mai Phan Loi from the Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper has “seriously damage the reputation” of the Vietnam People’s Army, “hurt the feelings” of families and colleagues of the military personnel who have perished on duty and “damage the prestige of other journalists”.

tuoitrenews.vn – Anxious cattle breeders in Vietnam must choose safe fodder brands for their herds, as a new law heavily punishing those that use banned chemicals will come into effect this July.
For the past month, Duong Thi Hoa, a cattle breeder in Dong Nai Province, has stopped mixing her own pig food from such ingredients as corn, soy beans, and premixes, which are a blend of various raw materials and additives that contain vitamins, minerals, antibiotics, and other essential ingredients.
Earthquakes can be induced by dams. Globally, there are over 100 identified cases of earthquakes that scientists believe were triggered by reservoirs (see Gupta 2002). The most serious case may be the 7.9-magnitude Sichuan earthquake in May 2008, which killed an estimated 80,000 people and has been linked to the construction of the Zipingpu Dam.
