The United States was consumed with two major, costly ground wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but not nearly as engaged in the world’s fastest growing region, the Asia-Pacific.

Though most of the world’s energy investments are still in fossil fuels, their iron grip is weakening. The largest source of power investment was the $313 billion put into alternate energy sources like wind and solar. According to Laszlo Varro, Chief Economist of the International Energy Agency (IEA), last year there were more renewables coming online than the entire growth of the energy sector. In many developing countries, wind and solar are less expensive than using imported gas to produce electricity. Laszlo Varro, Chief Economist of the International Energy Agency, described energy investments as the world transitions to a low carbon economy.

Nov 8 marks the close of a tumultuous presidential election campaign in the United States. As the end of incumbent President Barack Obama’s administration nears, six scholars working with the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute evaluate the Obama legacy in South-east Asia, and examine challenges for the incoming administration. In the first of this two-part series written for The Straits Times, we feature perspectives on Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Tomorrow, we will publish viewpoints on Thailand and Vietnam, as well as an assessment of US engagement with Asean.

UPDATED: Imagery Suggests Philippine Fishermen Still Not Entering Scarborough Shoal

Despite earlier reports, it appears that Filipino fishermen are still not fishing inside Scarborough Shoal. New imagery from October 29 showed a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel anchored just inside the mouth of the lagoon, where it has been for most of the period since China seized the shoal in 2012, apparently blocking access. At least 17 Philippine fishing vessels were present along the exterior of Scarborough’s reef. This corroborates reports that Filipino fishermen fished “just outside Scarborough’s lagoon” over the last week. There were also two Chinese civilian ships in the vicinity. According to the Philippine Navy, three other CCG vessels continue to patrol near Scarborough.
