Certain Vietnamese in Romania are committing illegal acts, including gambling and illegal residence, tarnishing their reputation, the labor ministry said.
In a document recently sent to businesses who have workers in Romania, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has called for behaviors like drinking, gambling and the illegal residence of Vietnamese workers in Romania to stop. Romania is a potential market with high demand for foreign workers, including Vietnamese, the ministry added.
Previously on Jan. 20, upon a visit to the Vietnamese Embassy in Romania as part of his trip in Europe, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked for a check-up on companies sending workers overseas after hearing about issues from the Vietnamese community abroad.

Workers at several unions have been told they will receive Tet gifts worth VND300,000 ($12), under the condition that they open a credit card with a finance firm.
Earlier this month, Tuan, president of a workers’ union in Dong Nai Province, received 150 Tet gifts, each worth around VND300,000, from the General Confederation of Labor.
However, instead of cash, transactions or physical products, workers were required to open an account at the HD Saison financial company, fill in information, download the app and open a credit card with a VND5 million limit. Workers were instructed to purchase products on e-commerce platforms, Tuan added.
The Belt and Road Initiative wasn’t a sinister plot. It was a blueprint for what every nation needs in an age of uncertainty and disruption.

Over the past two months, a sudden surge in Houthi rebel attacks in the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait connecting the Red Sea to the Arabian Sea prompted the world’s largest shipping carriers to halt transit through the Suez Canal for several weeks—with even more rerouting their vessels as the United States and Britain launched strikes on Yemen and the situation has escalated.

The tension in the Red Sea, which has led to increases in logistic costs and shipping time, is forecast to affect Vietnamese exporters of garment, textile, footwear and leather products from the second quarter of 2024 if it persists.
The Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association (Lefaso) and the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) Vice President and General Secretary Truong Van Cam said that domestic enterprises are keeping a close eye on the situation to negotiate new export deals.

Real estate lost its attractiveness and was not the leading asset class in 2023, according to the Vietnam Association of Realtors.
Speaking at the 2024 real estate forum organized in Hanoi last Friday by the association, its president, Nguyen Van Dinh, said: “The fall of real estate stemmed from uncontrolled development and lack of transparency and safety in the market over a long period of time.”
Between May 2022 and the end of 2023 the property market saw thousands of projects being suspended and many businesses shutting down with 80% of brokers quitting their jobs.

Some 64% of cryptocurrency investors lost money last year, a survey by data platform Coin98 Insights has found.
The survey collected date from 1,200 respondents last December. As cryptocurrencies went through a “Bitcoin winter” last year, nearly 30% of respondents said the reason for the loss was the fear of missing out.
Almost 36% did not have a detailed investment plan, and were unable to react to sudden market developments.
In terms of demographics, 85.3% of investors are male and aged between 18 and 36. They are mostly based in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s two biggest cities.
They have an income of VND10-25 million a month, and nearly half entered the cryptocurrency market in 2020-2022 when it soared.
This year investors are showing interest in AI projects and most expect Bitcoin to reach a new peak after ETF Bitcoin was approved in the U.S.

HANOI, Dec 29 (Reuters) – Vietnam’s economic growth slowed to 5.05% this year from an expansion of 8.02% last year, official data showed on Friday, weighed by weak global demand while public investment stalled amid an intensified anti-graft crackdown.
This year’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth was below a government target of 6.5% and lower than average growth of 5.87% during the previous decade, according to data released by the government’s General Statistics Office (GSO).
Vietnam is a regional manufacturing hub that relies heavily on trade. Exports in 2023 fell 4.4% from last year to $355.5 billion, with shipments of smartphones, its largest foreign currency earner, dropping 8.3%, the GSO said in its report.
theguardian.com Saltwater damage could see precious historical Buddhist artworks dating back hundreds of years slowly fade entirely from view

If you look closely, you can just about see the characters and scenes that once stretched across the walls of Wat Prasat, a temple in Nonthaburi. There’s the dark shape of an elephant’s head, a figure slouching on its back; outlines of swords pointing upwards to the centre of the display; patches of curved roofs.
“The mural used to be more vivid,” says Phra Maha Natee, the abbot of Wat Prasat. Even when he was a novice monk, 20 years ago, the image – which shows one of the jātakas stories that recall the Buddha’s past lives – was easier to understand. “The colour was brighter and sharper,” he says.
The murals offer a glimpse into a past era – a time of prosperity but also social upheaval, when a more empowered nobility had emerged, as did a desire, say historians, for Buddhism to play a more stronger role in reinforcing discipline in society. They date back to the mid or later years of the Ayutthaya kingdom in Siam, which existed from 1351 to 1767, in what is now Thailand and are a treasured early example of the art form.

In late October 2019, ambulance crews in the United Kingdom were called to a scene of horror.
On a quiet road in a nondescript industrial park in Essex, the bodies of 39 people were found when the heavy steel doors of a refrigerated truck trailer were opened.
The victims had suffocated. Death came slowly as oxygen levels inside the airtight container depleted for the 28 men, eight women and three children as their attempt to be smuggled into the UK ended tragically.
The youngest were two 15-year-olds. All were from Vietnam and the majority were from one province – Nghe An.
“I’m sorry Dad and Mum,” 26-year-old Pham Thi Tra My tapped out in a final text message she composed for her parents.
“Mum, I love Dad and you so much. I’m dying because I can’t breathe … I am so sorry, Mum,” she wrote in a phone message that was widely reported on at the time.
The message was delivered long before her death was officially confirmed by police investigators in the UK.

In 2021, seven people were jailed in the UK for a total of 92 years for their role in the deaths of the 39. This week, an eighth suspect, described as a “right-hand man” in the smuggling ring, was sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison by a UK court.
