Security Council Press Statement on Mass Graves in Gaza

The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Pedro Comissário Afonso (Mozambique):

The members of the Security Council expressed their deep concern over reports of the discovery of mass graves, in and around the Nasser and Al Shifa medical facilities in Gaza, where several hundred bodies, including women, children and older persons, were buried.

The members of the Security Council underlined the need for accountability for violations of international law and called for investigators to be allowed the unimpeded access to all locations of mass graves in Gaza to conduct immediate, independent, thorough, comprehensive, transparent and impartial investigations to establish the circumstances behind the graves.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their demand that all parties scrupulously comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, in particular regarding the protection of civilians and civilian objects.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the importance of allowing families to know the fate and whereabouts of their missing relatives, consistent with international humanitarian law.

The members of the Security Council emphasized the imperative of all parties to immediately and fully implement resolutions 2728 (2024), 2720 (2023) and 2712 (2023).

A people take to arms and fight for democracy. A military terrorizes civilians with airstrikes and land mines. Tens of thousands are killed. Millions are displaced.

Yet it is all happening almost completely out of view.

Recently, I spent a week on the front lines of a forgotten war in the Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar. Since a military junta overthrew a civilian administration there three years ago, a head-spinning array of pro-democracy forces and ethnic militias have united to fight the generals. The resistance includes poets, doctors and lawyers who traded life in the cities for jungle warfare. It also includes veteran combatants who have known no occupation but soldier.

Khi trả lời tờ báo quốc tế lớn nhất trong khu vực là Al Jazeera, người này đã nói các cuộc đụng độ giữa quân đội Sudan và lực lượng bán vũ trang nổi dậy đang thu hút thêm các bộ lạc, làm dấy lên lo ngại về một vòng xoáy giết người hàng loạt theo các sắc tộc.

Cho tới trước ngày bầu cử, nước Mỹ đã có hơn 100 triệu cử tri đi bỏ phiếu, tương đương 73% tổng phiếu kỳ bầu cử năm 2016 – kỷ lục trong nhiều thập kỷ.

Trong một năm đặc biệt, lần đầu tiên những bang được coi là thủ phủ của phe Cộng hòa như Texas và Georgia bất ngờ trở thành “tranh chấp”. Các bang được coi là nghiêng về Cộng hòa như Arizona, North Carolina, Iowa tỉ lệ tranh chấp cũng quyết liệt hơn kỳ bầu cử lần trước.

Cử tri Mỹ cần một sự thay đổi lớn, điều đã manh nha từ kỳ bầu cử trước: phe Cộng hòa gạt những ứng viên nặng ký truyền thống như Jeb Bush để lựa chọn tỉ phú Donald Trump, một người ngoài cuộc.

TTCT – Do Thái, Ki-tô và Hồi giáo là ba tôn giáo cùng dòng độc thần Abraham ở Trung Đông, chung khu vực và xuất xứ. Họ cùng thờ một đấng tối cao Yahve, Thượng đế, hay Allah. Tổ phụ Abraham hay Avraham hay Ibrahim trong 3 tôn giáo này cũng là 1 người.

Những đảo Ông Hoàng (Adalar) ở trước thành phố Istanbul (Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ) rất đẹp. Tôi đang ở bến phà Buyakada, trên đảo lớn nhất, thì giật mình. 

Bỗng đâu xuất hiện 5-7 thanh niên râu ria mặc áo dài đen tuyền đến chân làm hết hồn, thoạt nhìn tưởng khủng bố IS (Nhà nước Hồi giáo) trên đường hành quân. Nhưng họ không phải Hồi giáo vì có đeo thập giá và là một nhóm tu sĩ của chủng viện Ki-tô Chính thống giáo Aya Yorgi trên đảo đang tính đáp phà về đất liền.

Nếu bạn là người Hồi và kiêng cữ thức ăn theo đúng đạo thì ở New York bạn không có vấn đề gì cả. Bang này có trên 2 triệu người Do Thái, tức trên 10% dân số. Để phục vụ kiêng cữ của họ về thực phẩm, tới lon nước ngọt Coca Cola cũng phải hợp giáo luật (kosher). 

Nhưng thế thì dính dáng gì đến người Hồi? Người Hồi có luật về thực phẩm của họ (halal) và luật này rộng rãi hơn kosher. Bất cứ món gì đạt tiêu chuẩn kosher đều khắt khe và cao hơn tiêu chuẩn halal.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli leaders on Sunday credited an international military coalition with helping thwart a direct Iranian attack involving hundreds of drones and missiles, calling the coordinated response a starting point for a “strategic alliance” of regional opposition to Tehran.

The center-left Democratic Party added to its legislative majority after the recent parliamentary election, which would deal a blow to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s domestic reform agenda and possibly his efforts to improve ties with Japan.

South Koreans went to the polls on April 10 to elect every member of the unicameral National Assembly. To the chagrin of President Yoon Suk Yeol, his conservative People Power Party (PPP) did not secure a majority. JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israel-Hamas war has stretched on for half a year and become one of the most destructive, deadly, and intractable conflicts of the 21st century.

Since Hamas’ Oct. 7 cross-border attack, Israel has pummeled the Gaza Strip, displacing the vast majority of the population and causing many to flee to Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah. Food is scarce, the U.N. says famine is approaching and few Palestinians have been able to leave the besieged territory.

Meanwhile, Hamas continues to fire rockets into Israel from Gaza, and Hezbollah and other militant groups do so from southern Lebanon, prompting tit-for-tat fighting that has displaced thousands of civilians on both sides of Israel’s borders. Hamas is still holding hostages taken during the Oct. 7 raid, as well as the bodies of some who died in captivity. And cease-fire talks stretch on with no end in sight.
