Amendments to the Land Law that will take effect next year are set to make it easier for overseas Vietnamese to buy properties in the country.
Overseas Vietnamese, or Viet Kieu, who do not have citizenship will get exactly the same rights as Vietnamese citizens when the changes take effect in 2025.
The revised law will allow overseas Vietnamese to buy and rent houses that come with land, obtain land-use rights at housing projects and inherit residential and other types of lands adjoining houses.

HÀ NỘI — With approximately six million Vietnamese nationals living abroad, remittances sent to Việt Nam from 1993 to 2022 have amounted to US$190 billion, according to deputy foreign minister Lê Thị Thu Hằng.
Speaking at a press conference for the 2024 “Xuân quê hương” (Homeland Spring) programme on Monday, she said that this figure is almost equal to the amount of foreign investment capital disbursed in the same period.

He says: “I wanted to find opportunities in Vietnam though many people, including my parents, questioned my decision.”
He also sees Vietnamese in the U.S. and Germany looking to return home after completing their studies to work for a company or start a business.

ROLEA BA’IER DISTRICT, Kampong Chhnang — Four years ago, Vuen Phouk Thoung was promised a plot of land in a new neighborhood and a garment factory job nearby. Now his home is submerged in floodwater so high he spends all day and night in a hammock suspended from the ceiling.
“I don’t know what to do now,” said Thoung, 35, as he sat cross-legged on the wooden plank he constructed to swim in and out of his house. “I’ll just live like this, here.”
Thoung lives on a 40-hectare site in Kampong Chhnang where about 150 ethnic Vietnamese families were relocated after being evicted from their floating homes on the Tonle Sap starting in 2018. Ethnic Vietnamese people number an estimated 400,000 in Cambodia, but many lack citizenship rights and are unable to own property or access public services, according to Minority Rights Group International.

Trở lại Campuchia luôn mang tới cho tôi một cảm giác kỳ lạ. Ngay khi nhảy xuống chuyến xe đò từ TP.HCM hay rời chiếc máy bay ở phi trường Pochentong, tôi cảm thấy mình là một kẻ hoàn toàn xa lạ. Tiếng Khmer của tôi chỉ ở mức sơ đẳng, và tôi nhanh chóng lạc lối khi gắng giải thích với người tài xế xe tuktuk nơi mình muốn đến. Dù đã ghé thăm vài lần, Campuchia hiện đại là đất nước tôi không hề biết rõ. Trong khi đó, Campuchia của quá khứ thì tôi lại được nghe kể nhiều rồi, hay thậm chí có thể nói là một phần của tôi thuộc về đất nước ngày xưa đó.

When Dannie Doan moved to the United States at age 13 with her family, she refrained from speaking in her native language even though Texas had a large Vietnamese community.
Newly-arrived immigrants felt intense pressure to assimilate and learn “perfect English”, she said.
“There’s also a layer of discrimination if you speak a foreign language in public,” added Doan, who is now 31 and works as a climate adaptation professional. “Those incidents of white people yelling ‘Speak English’ isn’t that uncommon.”

Những năm trở lại đây, cụm từ “đổi mới sáng tạo” được nhắc đến thường xuyên, và được xem là chìa khóa đột phá để đưa đất nước đạt được những mục tiêu phát triển. Đảng, Chính phủ đã sớm xác định vai trò quyết định của đổi mới sáng tạo, khoa học công nghệ; đã ban hành nhiều chính sách, biện pháp, chỉ đạo quyết liệt để thúc đẩy phát triển lĩnh vực này.
Trên bản đồ công nghệ thế giới, Việt Nam vẫn đang tụt hậu về mức độ sẵn sàng công nghệ, về đổi mới sáng tạo và năng suất lao động. Theo Tổ chức Sở hữu Trí tuệ thế giới (WIPO), năm 2021, Việt Nam xếp hạng 44 về chỉ số đổi mới sáng tạo (GII) vẫn giữ vị trí hàng đầu trong các quốc gia có thu nhập trung bình thấp nhưng bị hạ 2 bậc so với năm 2020.
Để khắc phục mặt hạn chế, tạo môi trường và động lực phát triển mạnh mẽ hơn nữa cho đổi mới sáng tạo, khoa học công nghệ, giải pháp tập trung vào con người, nguồn lực con người có ý nghĩa rất quan trọng.

The Asian World Film Festival in the U.S. has conferred the lifetime achievement award on Vietnamese-American actress Kieu Chinh for her contributions to the movie industry.
The 84-year-old received the Snow Leopard Lifetime Achievement Award, the festival’s highest accolade, at an event in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
